"Well, thanks."
This was one of the amazing things about Chloe. She could get along with anyone - no matter who they were - if they gave her a chance first. Anyone who liked her right off, would more than likely end up very close to her. Those who didn't, but gradually learned to, would take a little longer to make it that far into her life.
"And is that a good thing I hope?"
"Well, I like pineapples." she said nonchalantly, "Peaches are ok...But they are sometimes a little too mushy; Then theres Apples...Slightly crisp on the inside; But then there are fruit mixes." she said wistfully.
"Your brother is a fruit mix. He's got a bit of it all." she said grinning.
"Oh, I'm Shadow. I'm pretty sure my name doesn't need explaining."
Shadow, huh? No explanation needed there. She wondered how that had come about. Had Chance just always been the louder of the two, even from baby's? Or had it grown gradually, and that was why they weren't together now? Was there some fight? Did they even talk to each other anymore? They should, Chloe decided, and she was going to do whatever it took to make that happen.
"So...You will come then? 10pm, Irving Hall on Saturday?" she asked, turning her body completely to face him. He was in for a bit of tongue lashing if he refused now.

"Well, I like pineapples. Peaches are ok...But they are sometimes a little too mushy; Then theres Apples...Slightly crisp on the inside; But then there are fruit mixes."
Shadow raised his eyebrows, how could someone compare people to fruit? It did make sense though, and he thought that a pineapple perfectly described him. Hard on the outside, soft on the inside. If only people gave him a chance. Hm, maybe his name should've been 'Chance'.
"Your brother is a fruit mix. He's got a bit of it all."
Shadow smiled almost forcefully, Of course he does. He thought. Chance was a bit of everything, and people loved that about him. Shadow resented that. Maybe if he changed, people would love him as much as they did Chance. Maybe he could get along better with people, maybe he could have a girlfriend.
"So...You will come then? 10pm, Irving Hall on Saturday?"
He sighed, he couldn't say no now. Plus he didn't have anything to do on Saturday night. "Sure, I'll come. Is Chance going to be there?" He asked, maybe this would be a good time for them to talk. Shadow couldn't recall the last time he had had a real conversation with his brother. It was always a conversation with Chance telling him about his friends, and then before Shadow could say something, he would leave. He would say, 'My friends need me.' Right before Shadow would ask if Chance knew anyone in Harlem that he could possibly get along with.

"Sure, I'll come. Is Chance going to be there?"
Chloe nodded and then smirked, "I'll make sure he's there. I think I can get him to come no sweat." she said said, emphasizing the part where she would make sure he came. It shouldn't be too awful hard. She could see the whole conversation playing out in her head right now;
"Hey Chance! Come to Irving hall and watch my show!" "Ok!"
Yep, that was how it would go. But if she worded it this way, it might not go so well;
"Hey Chance! Come to Irving Hall and watch my show, with your brother!" ....Insert random excuse not to here....
Chloe decided she might go with the first conversation...It would blow over better. Sure, Chance might be in for a little surprise when his brother shows up and Chloe knows all about it, but hey, life is life. Chloe could manipulate it all she wanted, but that wouldn't secure her a spot on the righteous table. Her conscience soon got the better of her though, and she decided she would tell him. Or...No. Yes. She would. She would tell him. Or maybe...It would be better...No. Stop it. You WILL tell him!
Chloe sighed. She hated losing arguments, especially when she was arguing herself.

"I'll make sure he's there. I think I can get him to come no sweat."
As long as Joker told Chance that Shadow wasn't going to be there, things would be fine. Shadow knew he had Chance's support in the whole Mike situation, but now he rarely spoke to Shadow anymore. If anything, Shadow had to go track down Chance if he wanted to talk. He was just so...busy, with what? No clue, something about a 'prank war'. Whatever it was, it was probably nothing important that could force him to stop talking to his own brother. "Just don't tell him I'm going to be there. We haven't talked in forever, and when I do try to talk to him, he goes the other way.
Shadow began to think back at what he did wrong in order for his brother to ignore him. Well, he was on Mike's side for starters, but that was important. Mike was offering them a new life on a silver platter, and Shadow was the only one smart enough to take it. Chance had to stay with his friends. Friends wouldn't get you anywhere. They would provide a few laughs, a few good memories, but that was all.
That's probably why Shadow didn't have many friends. He should probably try to be a little nicer about the whole friendship thing. At least fake it, he was a good faker. He had to do it around the Harlem newsies everyday. Just fake and all would be right with the world.

"Just don't tell him I'm going to be there. We haven't talked in forever, and when I do try to talk to him, he goes the other way."
Chloe's thought's exactly. She nodded knowingly to him, and let her blue eyes try lock onto his. She wanted to search his eyes, trying to find some sort of solution to him. He was a puzzle, a riddle of sorts, that needed solving, and Chloe was determined to do so. She wasn't able to catch his eye.
She continued her plucking of grass around her where she sat, and sprinkled the pieces that had been removed from the ground into her spread out skirt. When she had seated herself, she had let her skirt fan out around her, appearing to be a circle of fabric that engulfed her tiny middle.
Now, the light blue fabric that swirled around her, held little specks of grass and dirt, not to mention a few darker patches that had been sewn in. She brought her eyes back up to his again, trying to lock into his gaze. This time, she caught hold.
"What do you honestly think about your brother?" she asked suddenly, more quieter then usual.
((Eeewwww...Crappy. Short. ))

Shadow focused on the steady stream of water that was in front of him. It wasn't as smooth as it was before; thanks to Joker. Maybe that was a good thing, maybe having a little disruptiveness in his life would be okay. He already had Chance, but maybe just a bit more..
"What do you honestly think about your brother?"
His eyes locked with hers, he couldn't make eye contact and lie. Even though he was a good lier, he couldn't look someone in the eyes and not tell the truth. "Well," He started out with a slight sigh. "Chance is a great guy, I mean he's my brother. I'm sorta forced to love him. He was the only person I had for a while, and even now he's my closest friend."
Shadow paused, and took his gaze off of her eyes. She did have very pretty eyes. No, he couldn't be falling for his brother's girlfriend. That was wrong, those only things happened in books. He bit his lower lip, and tried not to think about it. Besides, he wasn't finished with his opinion on Chance.
"Chance gets everything he wants, Chance has everything. He has friends that adore him, and he has a great girlfriend. Sometimes I wonder if he knows how lucky he is. See me, I don't have anything. I have myself and that's all, people don't like me because of their first impression. I can't help the fact that I'm quiet, or that I'm shy. That's just who I am, it seems like I can't be as 'perfect' as Chance is." Shadow sighed. Being twins, they were compared to each other all the time, and it was terrible. Shadow always got critiqued, and Chance always got praised.

"Great girlfriend, huh?" she asked teasingly, and winked at him. She thought about his last statements for a few seconds. As perfect as Chance? Chloe liked Chance a lot, but she could still see flaws in him. He wasn't perfect. No one was perfect. For instance, Chance could be considered rude or wild to people who didn't understand him. In the same way, Shadow could be considered rude or arrogant because he was quiet and low key. Chloe, was much like Chance.
"Chance isn't perfect." she said haltingly. "Your not perfect." she continued, "I'm not perfect." she concluded.
"Did you ever think that sometimes you just gotta go for it?" she asked. "If you want something, take it. Don't wait for it to be given to you. The world is cruel and greedy. Heaven knows they ain't gonna willingly give you something you want without a price. You gotta get yourself or not at all." she finished her parable with a reassuring smile.

"Chance isn't perfect. Your not perfect. I'm not perfect."
Shadow thought about that for a moment. She was saying Chance wasn't perfect, which made him feel confused. Didn't people in relationships think the other was perfect? That's how some of the people he talked to said, they said their boyfriend or girlfriend was perfect. Shadow knew he wasn't perfect, the whole world knew that. But Chance wasn't...that made him feel almost happy that someone said Chance wasn't perfect. And for it to come from his girlfriend, that made Shadow's day.
"Did you ever think that sometimes you just gotta go for it? If you want something, take it. Don't wait for it to be given to you. The world is cruel and greedy. Heaven knows they ain't gonna willingly give you something you want without a price. You gotta get yourself or not at all."
Chloe had a point. One thing he learned from Chance is that you had to take risks in life. But that wasn't Shadow's personality. He liked the stay mellow, and go with the flow. Even if it meant not getting what he wanted. Maybe that's why Chance always got what he wanted, because he took risks. That's why Chance had friends, and a girlfriend, he took risks.
Shadow looked over at Chloe. She was another thing Shadow was jealous of, it wasn't the fact that Chance had a girlfriend. It was the fact that his girlfriend was her. He bit his lower lip again, and tried not to give into his feelings. He couldn't, Chance would hate him forever. Would Chance even know? Well, of course he would, she would tell him. Then Chance would come and kill Shadow. He didn't really feel like being killed by his brother today.
Maybe if he said something to her, it would help a little. Take his mind off of his feelings, and the urges he felt. "C-can I ask you a question?" He said. "What does Chance have that I don't?" He asked, quietly. Maybe he could change himself to get her to like him. He could act more like Chance, and then people would love him like they did Chance.

"C-can I ask you a question?"
Stuttering...That meant something, didn't it? Chloe wondered silently. She was beginning to get the feeling that she was no longer a pain in his ass anymore.
"Yeah - Go for it." she replied to his inquiry on asking a question.
"What does Chance have that I don't?"
Ooh...That was a tough one. Chloe didn't waste time with her answer though. Nothing she said was ever thought out first unless it was a life and death situation. This was no different, and she rattled off her thoughts;
"Depends on what kind of person is looking. If its someone who's quiet, and a low layer, then to them - you've got it all. But if its someone who's a bit...Out there...and well...Kinda like me, then...I don't know." Chloe bit her lip, slightly at a loss for words as to what she was trying to get across, "I mean...You ever heard the saying, 'Opposites Attract'?" she asked, "Ok, I think what I'm trying to say is that it depends on the person." she said hesitantly.
She was trying to make him feel better, and to lift his spirits about himself, but in reality, she couldn't find anything about him that was "Less than Chance". They had different personalities, yes, and they were both just as good looking as the other, but they were both unique too.
"Can I ask you something now?" Chloe asked. She didn't wait for him to answer, but went ahead and asked anyways;
"What do you think Chance sees in me?" she asked curiously. After all, they were twins and knew how the other thought. This question had been on her mind for a while now. What did he see in her? She was an independent, wild, stubborn girl with an attitude. Who would want that?

Ok, I think what I'm trying to say is that it depends on the person."
Opposites attract, huh? Shadow thought about that for a brief moment. That meant there still was hope, maybe she could see something special in Shadow, and dump Chance. No, no...that was a bad thought. Chance was his brother, he couldn't do something like that to Chance. Or could he? He needed a wake up call from his perfect little life. A perfect little life that Shadow wasn't a big part of. Chance couldn't go around happy-go-lucky all the time, life wasn't like that.
"What do you think Chance sees in me?"
In a way, Shadow was almost expecting that. He asked her a question, so it made sense for her to ask a question. Nothing wrong with it, that's how a lot of things worked in the world. What she asked wasn't necessarily a hard question, he just had to hide the fact that he liked her, and all would go well. How could he answer that without speaking from his heart? Maybe he should do that, speak from his heart. No, that wouldn't work, because he would be speaking for Chance. That would make her love Chance even more.
Shadow took a shaky breath, "Well, I think he saw someone who's just like him. A fun, playful person who loves life, and is just crazy." He said with a small smile. "I mean crazy in a good way." He added, hoping she wouldn't take offense to that. "I think he saw someone who was beautiful on the outside, and just as pretty on the inside." Shadow thought for a second, "Chance is very lucky to have you, I don't think he realizes just how lucky he is." He said, quietly.

"Well, I think he saw someone who's just like him. A fun, playful person who loves life, and is just crazy." "I mean crazy in a good way." "I think he saw someone who was beautiful on the outside, and just as pretty on the inside." "Chance is very lucky to have you, I don't think he realizes just how lucky he is."
To Chloe, those words were like a warm blanket being pulled away from her while she was sleeping.
I think he saw someone who was beautiful on the outside, and just as pretty on the inside.
Beautiful on the outside and the inside? This was something she had never heard.
Chance is very lucky to have you, I don't think he realizes just how lucky he is.
Now what was that supposed to mean? Despite what people may think and evidence that proves otherwise, Chloe was a deep thinker, and she had that feminine ability to detect feelings when they were sparking. Right now, her feelings detector was going off. She didn't know how she felt about it. A part of her felt like she wanted this to happen, and another part was screaming, "Chance! Chance! Remember him...?"
She liked Chance a lot - he was just like her, but she also felt really drawn to Shadow - Just as much as Chance, because he was everything she wasn't. Her head felt like it might explode from the pressure. She hated when things like this happened.
"Do you see the same thing as Chance?" she asked hesitantly, glancing down at her hands laying in her lap absently amidst the plucked grass. It was a much more personal question then Chloe had intended it to be, but that was just how she was. "I mean, you don't have to answer that..." she added hastily.

"Do you see the same thing as Chance?I mean, you don't have to answer that..."
Shadow looked down at his hands that were in his lap. What did she mean by that? He bit his lower lip, a nervous habit he now had. Never in his life could he remember being this nervous, and around a girl as well. Shadow has never shown any interest in girls at all, he thought that they were a waste of time. It took someone special to make him change his mind.
He still pondered the question she just asked, should he answer it? Would he scare her off if he said what he felt? That's how things usually worked out for him. He looked up out to the river that were in front of them. The river was restless now, it looked like how he felt inside. He didn't want to hurt Chance, but he was sick of staying in his shadow for so long.
"Yes...yes I do." He finally answered, looking back down at his hands. His hands couldn't talk back to him, and his hands wouldn't hurt him and leave him for his brother. Hopefully she wouldn't get mad at him, or get scared off and run off to tell Chance. Oh, that would go over real well with Chance. She would say, "Hey Chance, your brother likes me..." Then Chance would get mad, and all hell would break loose. Shadow sighed, everything was hopeless. Why did he even open his mouth?

He looked nervous. Was that good or bad? Chloe didn't know, but what came next surprised and delighted her;
"Yes...yes I do."
Chloe flashed a dazzling smile and leaned over and hugged him. Sparks were flying, emotions flaring, and the sun was shining. After pulling away from the hug, she struggled up to her feet (it was very difficult to do in a dress without being indecent).
"So, I'll see you at Irving Hall then!" she called happily, then turning on her heel, she picked up her skirt and ran off into the sunset...
((Chloe is OUT! Woot!))
