Street stopped tugging as Thad swung, she backed away carefully, picking up a forgotten stick. She could tell that Thad's punch would level someone his own size, but this man was large. The man raised his fist and punch Thad in the face and then in the stomach. Street raised the stick, tightening her grip on it. This scene was familiar...
Thad was bent over, struggling for breath. Street dropped the stick and pulled out a hankerchief, wrapped snow in it and waited. Surely the man wouldn't continue... She kept the stick close by anyhow, just in case.
Street jumped slightly when Thad's arm went around her, she helped him walk away and held out the pack of snow. "For the swellin'," She murmured. "Ya put up a good fight, though." She said, attempting to lighten the mood again. "I wouldn't have lasted one second with that man, and ya survived two punches!"
Street sighed. "At least he didn't try ta continue, I would've had ya back though. Honest! I had a stick waitin' in the wings... It's just... He was so big." She said with a slight tone of wonder.

"For the swellin'," She murmured. "Ya put up a good fight, though. I wouldn't have lasted one second with that man, and ya survived two punches!"
“Thanks,” Thad said taking the handkerchief with snow in it and holding it against his eye. It stung at first causing him to flinch, but after a minute it felt ok. “Yeah well, it was stupid on my part to even go against him, but that is just how I am. I never learn. Also, I never think before I do stuff. Sometimes I’m smart, other times not so much,” Thad explained smiling at his stupidity. He rubbed his stomach gently where it was sore. "Blows to the stomach are the worst in my opinion," he said laughing a little. He was glad Street was there to make him feel a little better about the fight.
"At least he didn't try ta continue, I would've had ya back though. Honest! I had a stick waitin' in the wings... It's just... He was so big." She said with a slight tone of wonder.
“You seriously mean that you would’a had my back? You aren’t just sayin’ that? Because if you’re serious it means a lot. I ain’t got no one on my side in this city, heck I there ain’t a person in this world that is on my side,” Thad said sincerely. It was true; he couldn’t think of anyone out there that had his back. So if Street meant what she said that was a big deal to him.

Street nodded. "You're welcome." She was glad she could help even a little.
“Yeah well, it was stupid on my part to even go against him, but that is just how I am. I never learn. Also, I never think before I do stuff. Sometimes I’m smart, other times not so much,” Thad explained smiling at his stupidity. He rubbed his stomach gently where it was sore. "Blows to the stomach are the worst in my opinion,"
"Well, maybe one day ya will learn, but until then... Try not ta die, yeah?" Street said, smiling. "I could imagine, I got a bruise there once and it hurt like nothin' else."
“You seriously mean that you would’a had my back? You aren’t just sayin’ that? Because if you’re serious it means a lot. I ain’t got no one on my side in this city, heck I there ain’t a person in this world that is on my side,”
"'Course I would've been on your side! I couldn't just leave ya when you've been so nice ta me, besides, we gotta stick together! I can see it now, Thad and Street against the world!" She sketched out a large street sign with their names on it. "It'll have lights flashin' and everythin'. And then, everybody will know that they can't mess with ya or I'll be on them with a stick." She laughed, pleased with the image of her beating a large man over the head with a large stick. "Can ya see it?" She asked him while checking his eye. "Does it still hurt a lot?"

Thad laughed as he imagined it. He felt safe knowing that Street would be there to protect him, “Yeah I can see it. It’s perfect. No one can bring us down. We’re a team now. And l same goes for me protectin’ you. Anyone tries to push you around they’re gonna have to answer to me. Ain’t no doubt about that!” Thad smiled. He had a friend; someone he could trust. It was just like old times back home when he was much much younger before his world started falling apart. “Ya know I haven’t had it easy, and I just want to thank you for helping me find some hope amongst all my bad memories,” Thad nodded.
Snow began to fall. He heard a church bell in the distance telling him it was already six in the evening. How did it get to be that late? No wonder he was hungry. It didn’t matter though. Thad was too happy that he had a friend to care about being hungry. It wasn’t like he had money to eat anyway.
"Does it still hurt a lot?"
“Well it doesn’t feel good,” Thad laughed. “But black eyes are normal to me anymore. Plus I’ve had injuries that hurt a lot worse than this.” Thad got a chill as he looked back to those times. It hurt to remember. Then he tried to look to the bright side. “Ya know they say what doesn’t kill ya makes ya stronger, and that’s the truth if I’ve ever heard it,” Thad told Street.

Street laughed with him, enjoying the moment. “Yeah I can see it. It’s perfect. No one can bring us down. We’re a team now. And l same goes for me protectin’ you. Anyone tries to push you around they’re gonna have to answer to me. Ain’t no doubt about that!”
"That's great! No I know that I can march into the East Side and get my money back from that hustler on the corner!" Street said hurriedly, remembering the man that had hustled her during a game of craps. "But, uh, not really... He's kinda, well, professional, ya know what I mean?"

Street was speechless for a moment, but then said, "Well, you're welcome! You've proven my theory that not all people are bad," Street heard the church bell. "I wonder where we can go ta eat..." Street looked around. Something glinted in the snow. "Well, ain't it or lucky day? There's ten cents!" She held out the coin to him.
“Ya know they say what doesn’t kill ya makes ya stronger, and that’s the truth if I’ve ever heard it,”
"Yeah, then I guess you'd be pretty strong, huh?" Street asked, smiling gently. "Ya know, I love it when people drop money. They never realize it and ya don't have ta get too close ta the person. The worst is when they realizin' you're pickin' their pocket, and then they try ta hold on ta ya. Ya gotta be quick." Street nodded. "Am I talkin' too much?"

“I ain’t none to good at gamblin’, but I could try and help if ya want. I know how them gambling guys are. They’ll do anything to win. Cheat, lie, anything,” Thad remarked.
Thad just smiled looking at the dime. “Some unlucky fellow who dropped it, but hey all the better for us.” Today was a lucky day for him. A new friend, ten cents- which meant food, and he could feel his troubles and heart ache slowly melting away.
"Ya know, I love it when people drop money. They never realize it and ya don't have ta get too close ta the person. The worst is when they realizin' you're pickin' their pocket, and then they try ta hold on ta ya. Ya gotta be quick."
“I never tried to pickpocket. I don’t imagine I’d be too good at it. I’m not really sneaky; ya know? If somethin’ is out in the open I can snatch it easy, but other than that not so much,” Thad smiled. “Why don’t we eat up there,” Thad said pointing to a small dinner up ahead.

“I ain’t none to good at gamblin’, but I could try and help if ya want. I know how them gambling guys are. They’ll do anything to win. Cheat, lie, anything,”
"I usually win, it's just when they start cheatin' that I lose." Street grumbled. "But hey, if I ever come across another craps game, I know who ta call!"
“Some unlucky fellow who dropped it, but hey all the better for us.” Street agreed, polishing it carefully. “I never tried to pickpocket. I don’t imagine I’d be too good at it. I’m not really sneaky; ya know? If somethin’ is out in the open I can snatch it easy, but other than that not so much,” Thad smiled. “Why don’t we eat up there,”
"It ain't really about sneakin', ya gotta have quick fingers and even quicker feet. Just pick someone out, a lady with a bag or a man with a watch cahin, followe them, bump into them and that's when ya grab the item, then apologize and run for it." Street explained, "It's actually rather easy, people always put things in their back pocket, not thinkin' about it. Half the time, they hardly notice it's gone."
She looked at where he pointed. "Yeah that looks good. I had dinner there one night, it's rather cheap, but good food. Kinda crowded. Uh...That's not a problem for ya is it?" Street asked quietly.

Thad listened closely as Street told him how to pick pockets. He found it fascinating. She made it sound easy, but he didn't know if he'd be good at it. Plus he was the type of person that liked to cause a scene. Maybe that was why he liked fights.
"Yeah that looks good. I had dinner there one night, it's rather cheap, but good food. Kinda crowded. Uh...That's not a problem for ya is it?" Street asked quietly.
"Nah, it'll be fine," Thad smiled, "I think I can stay out of trouble. I'm just glad to have a descent meal."
As they walked into the dinner Thad realized the day hadn't gone the way he had expected it to, but that was fine. He'd met Street, and suddenly he wasn't alone in the world anymore. He chuckled to himself think of how all he had wanted was some peace and quiet, but he'd spent almost the whole day talking and listening. He was glad though. Things were working out. He wasn't sure he'd ever learn not to fight guys bigger than him, but that was ok.
Something clicked in Thad's mind and he realized that no he hadn't had real peace and quiet that day, but now he was more at peace with life, and his troubles seemed to be quieted for now. He felt great.
