"Yeah it's happy; not probable, but happy," Snake Eyes sighed, "But your family...will they be alright? I don't want 'em to get hurt or nothin'...I know how it is to lose people dear to ya."
"When's this lady ya got to work for expectin' ya?" Snake Eyes asked.
Goldie nodded. "My family should be alright. The Klan isn't to active right now, at least they weren't when I left. They got in trouble with the law after they lynched a little boy two weeks ago." Goldie shrugged, lynching happened all the time where she lived.
"As for the lady, I ain't sure. The letter didn't say... I would expect before dark. I can always say I got delayed and leave it at that. It ain't lyin' 'cause I'm tellin' the truth, just not all of it." Goldie said, she pet Mud again.

Snake Eyes shivered at the thought of someone being lynched. He'd heard the horrible stories. It wasn't right. No one had the tight to do things like that and yet it happened along with a billion other bad things in the world.
"As for the lady, I ain't sure. The letter didn't say... I would expect before dark. I can always say I got delayed and leave it at that. It ain't lyin' 'cause I'm tellin' the truth, just not all of it." Goldie said, she pet Mud again.
Snake Eye's smiled as he watched the dogs tail wagging. "I do that- not tell all the truth. Sometimes people ask things that ain't their business and I only tell them half the story," Snake Eyes told, "Some of the kids around here are real nosy like. Not that I mind all that much, but there are things that they don't got the right to know."

Goldie nodded, she did this too. "I always think 'it's alright so long as I don't hurt anyone with it' ya see?" Goldie asked him. She brushed her hair out of her face.

"You familiar with the city?" Snake Eyes asked. He remembered when he had first arrived and how confused he had been. It took him months to get acquainted with all the parts of the city. He'd fallowed other newsies around learning as much as he could. Then some days he would just walk to where he felt; just like he was doing today.
"I live in Queens but I roam around to all parts of the city. Well...all the parts of the city except for Midtown. Midtown is scary," Snake Eyes took a moment to think of all the things he'd heard about Midtown. Nothing could make him want to go there. "Today I came here to check out the trains. I don't know where to go next. Probably Manhattan," Snake Eyes smiled telling Goldie his plans.
He loved the city. It was so free. Not that his home in Connecticut wasn't free it was just that the city had so much to see. He never got bored. There were a million things for a kid to do in New York.

Goldie shook her head. "I thought I'd be alright, but when I got here I realized New York is a lot larger then Chicago. Plus in Chicago I didn't really leave Julius's neighborhood. I might've gotten into trouble if I had wandered into another part. I'm not use to all this freedom." Goldie tapped her chin. "I bet you know you're way real good, huh?" She asked, studying him. "A smart boy like you..." She said sweetly.

Snake Eyes looked at his feet shyly as Goldie complimented him sweetly. "Yeah I know my way around. I spend almost everyday just walking and seeing whats new. It's a good way to pass time. Plus I find that if I keep myself busy I don't think about being hungry as much," Snake Eyes said like nothing was wrong with going hungry. "I'd be real pleased ta show ya around sometime if ya want. It really is a beautiful city. There is lots to see and do here. I've been here a while now and there is still a lot I haven't even gotten to see!"

"Oh my! This place must be big if you're still finding your way around." Goldie murmured nervously, she wrung her hands and chewed on her lip. "I know what you mean. Whenever we had a bad harvest on the farm, Mama would make us all go out and play. That way, when we got in, we was so tired that we couldn't think of food." Goldie said, nodding. "Activity makes everything easier on the stomach and the mind. Things just seem to work themselves out." She smiled. "Don't you go to school?" She asked suddenly. "Every young boy should go to school."

"Don't you go to school?" She asked suddenly. "Every young boy should go to school."
Snake Eyes laughed, "School? Heck I hated school when i did have to go! It's a blessin' to not go. I guess for some kids it's alright, but for me nahh. I don't handle school none to well. My brother never did neither. We both skipped lots. Then when things started gettin' real tough we quit all together."
Snake Eyes thought back to the times he'd skipped school. It had always been fun. They had spent days swimming and just laughing. He would give anything to go back there to those fun times.

Goldie looked puzzled. "How do you expect to get ahead in life? For my brothers and me, it's a privelage to go. We have to fight hard to go to school, every day. You don't want to be a newsie or a factory worker or on the streets when you're older, do you?" Goldie asked kindly, she was confused. "I don't know what I'm sayin'." She laughed. She remembered cutting school sometimes, until her mama brought the switch down on her and Mason. She winced, remembering the pain of the branch.

Goldie looked puzzled. "How do you expect to get ahead in life? For my brothers and me, it's a privilege to go. We have to fight hard to go to school, every day. You don't want to be a newsie or a factory worker or on the streets when you're older, do you?" Goldie asked kindly, she was confused. "I don't know what I'm sayin'." She laughed. Snake Eyes thought a moment. "No you are right. I mean I know ya got ta fight ta go ta school and all being that you're..." He was referring to the color of her skin, but he didn't want her to think he saw as different for being black so he just went on talking, "Anyway....I was always told that I should be more thankful, but really school just ain't for me. Never was. And as to when I grow up...I really dunno. I'm content with my life, well sort of." There were parts of his life he was fine with. The fact he was free to roam the city and all. One thing he wasn't fine with was that he was alone. That...that bothered him a lot.

Goldie laughed. "Go on, say it, I'm black, you're white. We can't change who we are." She told him, nudging him slightly. Her dark eyes crinkled slightly when she laughed. "It's a fight for anybody down south, white or black, to go to school." She told him.
"How do you know school ain't for you if you don't ever go?" She asked, laughing. "I understand what you mean, my brother Mason dropped out of school, so did my cousin Julius." She said softly. "There must be somethin' you want to be. Maybe... I dunno, President?" She asked. "That's what Eli-my youngest cousin-would always say, that he's be President. Then his mama would always tell him to shut his trap and or he'd never grow up to be anythin'." Goldie laughed, remembering all the fun times on the plantation.

Snake Eyes laughed along with Goldie. "Sound's like somethin' my brother would do," he smiled. "But really i dunno what i wanna be. I never thought about it. See in Connecticut I just figured I'd be a farmer like everyone else, but now I'm here in this big city." He thought a moment. Reality seemed to sink in a bit. He couldn't be a newsie forever. No one bought from older newsies- everyone liked the young kids. "I'm really not good at much see. Maybe I'll make my way back up north or somethin'. I know one thing. I definitely ain't goin' to school," he said mater a factly.

Goldie thought a bit. "Well, what can't you be a farmer here? Just because it's all sidewalk and buildin'? Nah, make a farm on the rooftops, not only would people buy from you, but they'd probably pay you to just look at it." She nodded, "How about that? That would be somethin'. I'd pay to see that. Sure would." She smiled, laughing gently. She wasn't making fun of him, no it was more then that. She was laughing because that would be refreshing in a dreary landscape like New York. "Then again, there's always Central Park."

A wide grin came across Snake Eyes' face. He pictured it. A whole corn field of a rooftop. "Ya really think it'd work?" he asked. "That would be amazin', but then again it just wouldn't be the same as home." He thought for a moment. Maybe it wasn't even the fact that it wasn't home that made it seem odd, but instead the fact that his brother wouldn't be there to help him out. He couldn't see himself running a farm in Connecticut or on a rooftop in New York without his loving brother. "It sure would be somethin' though. I mean really where else would ya ever see something like that? One thing you'll find about this city is that there are endless possibilities. Things that don't seem like they could happen anywhere in the world happen here," Snake Eyes said smiling as he thought about it.

Goldie nodded. "Anything can happen here. Like a black girl goin' to school." She grinned, laughing. "Or a young boy findin' his brother. You'll find him one day, I'm sure. Even if it isn't here on earth." She gestured upward. "You'll find him in heaven. Everybody finds someone in heaven. Me... I'm gonna see my grandmama again." She looked at him gently. "I've lost someone too. My beau. He went out west to find land so I can build my own buisness when I graduated. He said he'll buy land, make a town and name it 'Goldie's Glen.'" She smiled, lost in thought.
