"Guys can be such idiots sometimes...." He thought out loud.
Dreamer nodded, agreeing a bit. Sometimes, though, guys can be idiots and not even mean it. Roger finished cleaning her cut, and he stood up and tossed the towel he grabbed nearby to her after wiping his hands on it. She caught it at the last minute
"I'm gonna go wash my hands and then see what we have to eat..."
"OK," Dreamer replied softly.
As Roger went into the kitchen, Dreamer looked around herself as if she were in a different world, and stood up, arms around herself in a protective way she always had for herself, walking around. She really wasn't looking at anything in particular so she just looked out the window at the busy streets and such.
"Do ya wanna come in here and help me?"
Dreamer kind of jumped when Roger spoke up, ducking his head out of the kitchen. She turned to look at him, and gave a smile. The least she could do in return to helping her was to help Roger in whatever he needed help in.
"Sure," she said, coming into the kitchen. "What do you want me to do?"

"Sure," she said, coming into the kitchen. "What do you want me to do?
He stepped aside as she walked in. He rubbed the back of his neck and looked down, embarrassed. "Well, I have food, but I don't know what to do with it..." He gave a small laugh and shrugged lazily. Roger could do alot of things, but cooking was not one of them. He rarely at at home, but instead spent his dinner's at Tibby's or Johnson's. Truthfully, he didn't even know he had food in his kitchen. He didn't even know how old it was.
He gingerly picked through the food in the cabinets, expecting something to jump out at him. What he found was not encouraging. "Maybe we should just go out to eat..." He dug his his hands into his pockets and pulled out what he had. "Well, maybe not..." He had enough money for himself, maybe, but defiantly not enough for both of them. Looking at Dreamer, he realized she wouldn't have enough money for both of them either. So it was either eat here, or don't eat. Or the could steal food, but that was dumb.
Roger always set aside money for rent every month, but never money for food. He was a laid back person, and took whatever was thrown at him. If that meant not eating that day, eh, he didn't care.

Dreamer bit back a smile at how Roger was going around the kitchen in a frantic search for what to eat. When he found that there was nothing and only had some money for himself to eat out, Dreamer stepped in to help.
"Look," she said. "I have some money in my pocket. I managed to sell some newspapers this morning. I'm sure I have enough to add to our collection. I think we'll have enough to buy two decent meals somewhere,"

Roger turned to her and smiled. His face showed definent relief. "Good...alright.." He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. He fluffed it up and smiled at her. He was glad she had suggested it. He felt bad about not paying for her lunch. As the gentleman, he felt the right to buy the ladies lunch, but he guessed this was different, in a way.
He glanced at her and smiled, "Ready?" He held at his arm for her. When she linked arms with him, he led her out of the kitchen and into the main room. A quick glance around the room revealed that they had not left anything, except a mess. He smirked and thought about how he needed to clean this up later.
They made their way out of the door, but not before Roger grabbed his keys and locked the door. He didn't own much, but didn't want anyone in his house. They made their way down the street and ended up in front of Johnson's. He turned to her, blocking her view of the restaurant. "Listen, I work here and I am tired of it. Is there any place we can go... besides here?" A hint of a smirk played at his lips.

"Listen, I work here and I am tired of it. Is there any place we can go... besides here?"
"Hmmm..."Dreamer thought aloud, her head tilted back a bit as if she were thinking hard. "...We could try Tibby's down in Manhatten. They've got some pretty good stuff to eat. That is if you want, of course,"

Roger nodded and said, "That works," he started, "And you said you live in Manhattan?" He figured after they ate that he could drop her off at her place. He also felt obligated to talk to her leader, Jack, about what happened. Roger wasn't much of a people person, but felt the need to talk to Jack.
He followed Dreamer until the reached Tibby's. It was a quaint little diner, much like Johnson's. They made their way in and were seated at a booth by the window. He sat opposite Dreamer and order a soda.

Dreamer was curious as to why Roger didn't want to go to Johnson's to eat. Even though he already explained his reason why he didn't want to go, Dreamer thought that there was something else, but it was none of her business. She didn't want to stick her nose in places where she shouldn't be sticking it.
"And you said you live in Manhattan?"
"Mmm-hmm," Dreamer nodded as they walked down the street, and smiled. "...Heh...They're a really great group. It's like one big giant family,"
Dreamer and Roger made their way into Manhatten and down the street to Tibby's, which wasn't that far away from the Lodging House. After settling themselves down, and Dreamer ordering a coke for herself after Roger made his order, she decided she'd start off a conversation.
"So," she started. "How long have you been a waiter over at Johnson's?"

Roger sighed through his nose and grinned easily. "Yeah, they all seem nice enough," Roger said with a shrug. He had met a few different types of newsies. There was the rough and tough type and there was the nice type, and then there was the ones that were right in the middle. Manhattan newsies were right in the middle. They all seemed very nice though.
Roger sniffed and ran a hand through his short hair. Occupying himself while he spoke, Roger traced small circles on the table. His chin was balanced in his right hand. "Just a short whole. Not to long," He looked up at her and smiled warmly. "What 'bout you?"

Dreamer shrugged.
"Just a few weeks," she replied. "I just came up here from Texas. I'm still learning the ropes around the newsie business,"

Roger's gaze fell on Dreamer and he watched her as she talked. The shyness and timidity she portrayed earlier, seemed to be melting away. Her eyes shown with something Roger had missed before. She seemed to be opening up.
He nodded, somewhat absently, and pursed his lips. He really didn't know how to reply to that, but he wanted to keep up the friendly conversation. "So, who are you pretty good friends with?" He cringed at how stupid that sounded.

"So, who are you pretty good friends with?"
Dreamer shrugged.
"I'm not sure," she confessed. "I've met some people, and they're nice to me and all, but I don't really know anyone well enough yet to become really good friends with. But at least I have some friends, if you know what I mean. At least you have someone to watch your back,"

Roger nodded, understanding completely. Roger had always been a closed up person, only recently opening up. He opened up for just a few people. Those he could trust and those he could relate to.
He could feel himself falling for this girl. Not in the literal sense, like falling in love, but just falling for her. She was just like he was, closed and trust less. He related to her. He wanted, no craved, to learn more about her. He craved to talk to her more. Maybe he just wanted a friend. Maybe he just wanted someone to talk to.
"I understand," he said. He hesitated, but continued. "I couldn't help but notice that you are somewhat shy." He scooted forward in his chair, so not to be heard. "Is there any reason that this happened to you?" He hoped she understood.

Yes. There was a reason as to why Dreamer was always shy. A very dark reason. She sort of looked down at the table, fiddling with her thumbs.
"Um..." she said softly. "It's kind of a long story,"

Um..." she said softly. "It's kind of a long story,"
Roger hesitated. He didn't want to push Dreamer away. They had just met after all. "I have time..." he said, after a long pause. Something in him yearned to hear her story and maybe share his with her as well. He yearned for someone he could trust that had the same experiences he did.
He leaned his head down, and met her eyes, that were turned away. "You can trust me," he said in a soft tone.

"You can trust me,"
But that was the very thing that started Dreamer's unhappiness: Trust. She put her faith in people who betrayed her and used her. She was frightened. She never wanted that to happen again. Trusting people, like strangers, costed the lives of Dreamer's parents. Trusting strangers costed Dreamer's unhappiness.
However, something inside her heart compelled her to tell Roger her story, but another held her back.
"It's complicated," she warned. "I don't think any other newsie has a story like mine,"
