"And that is why you are sleeping in my bed. Did your mother ever teach you manners?"
Bella frowned sadly, "Not really. She was always too busy." She crossed her arms. "I was just always there...sometimes I think I was an accident." She admitted, pausing for a bit. "If you're really sure about it, I guess I can..." She said, trailing off. She didn't want to intrude on Mike's house, she was just grateful enough to be here.
"If he told you that the earth was square... would you believe him?"
She thought for a minute, what idiot would think the earth was square? Edward probably did...especially when he was drunk. She shook her head slowly, "No...but if he told me that he would be drunk. I don't think he's that dumb." She said, with a small smile. "But when he tells you something over and over, you just get used to it and start believing it."
"What!?!?"
Bella hung her head, "He told me I can't eat. I've been bad." She said. "I didn't buy him a paper because I used the penny to get something to drink. So he told me I couldn't eat again until he said so." She said, feeling embarrassed. She was starving, and she felt really weak. "I am really hungry, though." She said, quietly.

"Not really. She was always too busy. I was just always there...sometimes I think I was an accident."
All of this was shocking to Mike. You could say he was sheltered as a child. He was so used to the picture perfect family. But when he came to New York, Mike saw the truth behind the facade. Even when adults acted perfect, there was always to weakness in the family home. There was no cookie cutter marriage nor family. No one was perfect, even though Mike thought his parents were. "You're not an accident. So, just stop thinking that."
"If you're really sure about it, I guess I can..."
Mike chuckled and shrugged. "Well, your the one that is going to have to deal with the smell.." He winked and turned to walk to his room. It actually wasn't that bad. The bed was made and the clothing was picked up. But it still had the smell of a teenage guy. But she could deal with it, she would have to. He pulled a blanket off the bed for himself, leaving her with two. "Will two be enough?" Mike inquired. He hoped it would, because he didn't have any other blankets.
"No...but if he told me that he would be drunk. I don't think he's that dumb."
Mike laughed. That was one of the reasons Mike didn't get drunk. Things you never meant to say come out loud. Mike remembered going to a bar and seeing just this happening. A young man, with one to many drinks in his system, professed his love to another man that was sitting beside him. A few crazy things happened, but in the end both of them ended up on the street with no money. It was something Mike would never forget.
"But when he tells you something over and over, you just get used to it and start believing it."
Mike sighed. He didn't know what else to say. He'd said about everything to try and convince her that she wasn't worthless. Pitiful creature of darkness, what kind of life have you known? God give me courage to show you, you are not alone! Quickly, Mike wrapped his arms around her and pulled her into a hug. If the newsies saw him now, they would be amazed. Mike chuckled, mentally picturing their faces.
"He told me I can't eat. I've been bad."
Mike snorted a laugh, but tried to cover it up with a laugh. That was the silliest thing he'd ever heard! She couldn't eat because she'd been bad? Mike guessed it wasn't her fault; she didn't know any better. It was an automatic response for her. It was pounded into her head and she really didn't know any other way to respond. "Well, what if I told you that he can't tell you what to do?" Her uncle wasn't her guardian. He had no right to tell her what to do! They leave the ones they love the way they found the. A normal person must dismiss you with disgust, and weep for those who trusted you. Her uncle was a monster and he didn't deserve her trust.
"I didn't buy him a paper because I used the penny to get something to drink. So he told me I couldn't eat again until he said so."
Again, Mike struggled not to laugh. The fact that she believed him amazed Mike. Mike wondered what would happen when Bella got older. Would she still listen to her uncle? Would she still be defenseless when he beat her? Pity the child but not forever, not if she stays that way. Bella was going to have to learn to say no, or say yes. Freedom of speech. She was going to have to learn how to tell him no and tell herself yes.
Pity instead the careless mother What she missed What she lost when she let me go And I wonder does she know I wouldn't call -- a crazy thing to do Just in case she said who?
Did her parents realize what they were missing? Their little girl was growing up. Soon she would be gone forever. She was growing up to fast, though. She was fending for herself and pretty much living on her own. She had seen things that no one her age should see. She was doing things someone her age shouldn't be doing. When her parents finally opened their eyes, they would be sorry.
"I am really hungry, though."
Mike smiled and nodded. "Lets get some food then!" He walked to the door, but stopped. "Do you want to go out or stay here?" He had food in his kitchen, stuff that his landlord's wife had provided, but he hadn't exactly been in there to see what he had. He usually just went out to eat.

"You're not an accident. So, just stop thinking that."
Bella opened her mouth to say something, but then closed it. What was the use? She wasn't going to win anyway, she crossed her arms over her chest. At least she could still think that. That's all Edward told her was that she was an accident. She tried not to believe him at first, but she was in her early teen aged years and things were easy to believe then.
"Will two be enough?"
She nodded, eagerly. Two was more than enough, one probably was more as well. She was lucky if she got a blanket year round, she got a potato sack as a 'blanket' in winter. It didn't help much, but at least she didn't freeze to death. "Two's fine, I don't even have to use two. I could sleep without a blanket." She said.
When Mike hugged her, she had a small glimmer of hope. Maybe she wasn't worthless, maybe someone actually did care about her. She buried her face into his chest, enjoying how she was comforted. She never had any siblings, and she was semi glad because they wouldn't have to face what she went through. Mike made a good older brother for her, he actually resembled what a family was supposed to be like. Loving, and caring. She never got that feeling, she just felt lonely and cold all of the time.
There is a castle on a cloud, I like to go there in my sleep, Aren't any floors for me to sweep, Not in my castle on a cloud.
She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, looking at Mike. So many secrets, I've longed to share. All I have needed, is someone there. Maybe he could help her start over, she didn't have any drastic rules now. For the first time, she actually felt loved and free.
"Lets get some food then! Do you want to go out or stay here?"
Bella shrugged, "It doesn't matter." She said, she really wanted to go out and enjoy a taste of a restaurant, a luxury she could never have. "Whatever you want to do." She was an indecisive person, even if it wasn't for Edward forcing her not to make her own choices.

"Two's fine, I don't even have to use two. I could sleep without a blanket."
Mike felt angry boil inside of him. All day he had been calm. All day he'd dealt with her innocence and her meek manner. But no more, Mike couldn't deal with it any longer. He turned on her. "Would you just shut up?!? Stop playing the innocent little girl and take what your given!" Mike took a deep breath and turned around. He couldn't look at her. Her face was shocked, her mouth agape. He wasn't angry at her, just frustrated. It was so infuriating how she was so fragile. Bella was like a porcelain doll. One false move and she would break. And she knew that. She was very cautious about whom she trusted and what she took from them. It was getting annoying, and Mike couldn't bare it any longer.
Mike took another deep breath and exhaled. As he did so, Mike turned back around and faced her again. He kept his eyes on the ground, afraid of her reaction. "I'm sorry... I'm just stressed," he lied. She didn't need to know the real reason why he was upset. Mike didn't even know why he was so upset. He just was. He guessed everyone had to have their week spot, even the bad guy.
They stayed in their warm embrace for a few moments. Mike smiled and pulled away. "Feel better?'
"It doesn't matter. Whatever you want to do."
Mike raised his eyebrows and made a face in amusement. "Are you being indecisive or difficult?" Mike decided it was time to lighten the mood and have some fun. Mike was a good fun maker. His mind searched for any ideas on what sounded fun.

"Would you just shut up?!? Stop playing the innocent little girl and take what your given!"
Bella cringed when he yelled at her, and braced herself for the beating that was probably going to follow. She was confused, Mike wanted her to be something different than what she was "supposed" to be. Edward told her she was supposed to be seen and not heard, she wasn't supposed to ask for anything and she was supposed to obey. She was surprised at Mike for yelling at her, even though she knew she deserved it. She was just so confused, and all she wanted was a better life. Bella worried that Mike could turn and become like a second Edward.
"I'm sorry... I'm just stressed,"
She blinked, meekly. "Are you not going to hit me?" She said in a quiet voice, she didn't want to egg him on but she was curious. "Its okay." She said. At least he apologized, Bella told herself. That was a rarity, when she used to live with her uncle she was told everything was her fault and she had to apologize for everything.
"Feel better?'
She nodded weakly, "Yes, I'm fine." She noticed the small tears that were trickling down her face. She wiped them away quickly, hoping Mike didn't notice. She didn't like to cry, it made her feel weak, and she hated that.
"Are you being indecisive or difficult?"
Bella smiled, "Both." She replied with a smirk. "We could always go out.." She said. At home, she was never allowed to go out to restaurants, because Edward couldn't control his temper.
