It was one of those days where she couldn't stand being in Brooklyn. Sometimes, it just got to be too much for her. Spot was always stomping around, carrying on about the hardships of his life and it just drove her up the wall. She couldn't take it anymore. So she'd sold in Manhattan today. Even though she wasn't nearly as familiar with the place. She hadn't gotten all her papers sold as fast as usual today,so it was late afternoon, almost evening when she finally sat down to rest in central park, pennies jingling pleasantly in her pocket. At least she'd get a good meal tonight.
SlingShot sighed as she sat on a park bench, looking up at the steadily darkening sky over the city. She was frustrated. Restless. She hated that she was still in the same place she'd been for years. Brooklyn. Living in Brooklyn, selling in Brooklyn. And everyone in her borough was so damn full of pride. Not that that was a bad thing... still, she got sick of always trying to live up to the Brooklyn reputation. Just as Manhatteners had their own, perhaps less violent, reputation to uphold.
All she knew was that she was restless. Dying to meet someone new, do something new. Anything that would distract from the utter boredom and tedium that was her life as a newsie in New York City.
She stood up, pulling her hat farther down on her head and shoving her hands in her pockets. At first glance, anyone around would think she was a boy, unless they already knew her well. She liked it better that way. It caused a whole lot less trouble for herself. It was only upon much closer examination that someone might come to the conclusion that she was, in fact, female. But she usually didn't let anyone get close enough to make that deduction. She was only slightly paranoid, but she had good reason.
The sky was getting darker, and she smiled up at the slowly appearing stars as she ambled aimlessly down a path in Central Park. Maybe she wouldn't go back to Brooklyn tonight... perhaps she could find the Manhattan Lodging House, see if she'd be permitted to stay the night there... She sighed, watching her breath make clouds in front of her, shivering slightly. It wasn't cold yet, but chilly enough to make her shiver. Chilly enough to make her decide to forgo dinner in order to spend a few days saving up to buy herself a cheap jacket somewhere. She should probably work on better shoes, too, now that winter was coming. She usually couldn't bring herself to steal.
She smiled to herself, and changed direction slightly, heading towards where she knew the Manhattan Newsies lived. Yes, maybe she'd stay in Manhattan tonight.
