Full Name: Eric Conlon
Newsie name: Spot Conlon
Name origin: Since becoming a newsie, he's sold papers in the same spot every day.
Age: 16
Gender: Male
Birthplace: Brooklyn
Currently Living: Brooklyn
History: Brigid and Duane Doyle and Rosaleen and Neil Conlon were on the same boat to America, fleeing from Ireland during the Great Potato Famine. The two couples met and became fast friends. Upon their arrival to New York, they kept in touch, and when they each had a child, it was almost predetermined that they would marry. Rebbecca Doyle and Andrew Conlon were soul mates. Once married, they had two children, Eric and, four years later, Cassandra.
Eric lived a normal life in Eastern Brooklyn with his parents and younger sister. After a while, Andrew lost his job, and he took to drink. He blamed his Irish roots, but Eric knew that he was drinking for the sake of it. Soon, Andrew's alcoholism escalated to the point of constance. It didn't take long for the alcohol to have other affects, and soon Andrew was beating his wife and children. One night, Andrew came home, completely drunk out his senses, and began beating his wife until he killed her. His daughter he killed in a similar manner. Eric was there to witness it.
To escape his father and the memory of watching his mother and sister die, Eric ran away as soon as he could. He struggled on the streets for weeks, stealing to get by. Slowly his heart began to harden against the world. By the time he realized he could become a newsboy and make money, he was cold and hard as nails. Because of his aptitude for fighting and toughness, he moved quickly through the ranks in the network of Brooklyn newsies. Before long, he was respected and feared enough to become their unelected leader, something they hadn't had before.
One day, his thoughts troubled by the remnants of his old life, Eric (newly dubbed Spot Conlon) returned to his old house to see his father, sitting at the kitchen table. Furious that his son had been gone for so long, Andrew lashed out at him. Spot put up a fight, and once a neighbor got the police, Spot was able to escape them, and Andrew was sent to prison. Spot hasn't seen or thought of his family since. The only reminder of his old life is the key he wears around his neck, the key to his house. Once he's grown up, he wants to return there and live his life there. Until then, he stations himself by the docks near the Brooklyn Bridge, about as far away from his old home as possible.
Hair Color: Dirty blond
Hair Style: Unkempt
Eye Color: Gray
Skin Color: Slightly tanned.
Height: 5' 8"
Weight: 140
Clothing Style: Spot wears a checkered shirt with old trousers, stolen shoes, and a gray cabbie hat. He is well-known for his pink suspenders.
Items owned: Spot doesn't own much besides his clothes. He has his walking stick, a cane stolen from his father's house (an heirloom from Ireland), the house key, and a slingshot he received for his birthday several years ago from his maternal grandparents. With a slingshot, Spot is the best shot around.
Troubles: Spot is extremely hard to reach. He is cold, insensitive and stubborn. He uses his powers of intimidation as a tool, whether administering a harsh glare or threats that he is never afraid to carry out. Spot's friendships are very few. He has high expectations from those he calls his friends, but won't always do what is asked of him. Spot is largely his own person, uncaring of the opinions of anyone else, because he knows he is always right. Spot can become fierce when irritated, and his cynical, biting humor is only funny to him.
However, Spot is a haggling man. If a deal has something in it for him, he will gladly accept. Despite his faithlessness, Spot will never go back on his end of a deal.
Fears: Despite everything, Spot Conlon possesses the pitfall of being superstitious, which explains his insistence on the same selling spot every day and the possession of his old house key.
