Full Name: Eleanor Charlotte Lope
Newsie name: Nellie
Name origin: She hates her real name and prefers Nellie.
Age: 16
Gender: Female
Birthplace: Detroit, Michigan
Currently Living: The Bronx
History: Richard and Myra Lope were an unhappily married couple living in Detroit. After eight years of marriage and two children, they no longer wanted anything to do with each other, but their religious beliefs kept them from a divorce. It wasn’t long before Myra began seeing other men, and soon became pregnant. She was able to convince Richard that the child was his. After Eleanor was born, she was raised in a household that seemed torn in two with her mother on one side and her father on the other. Her older brothers, Bert and Jeremiah, tried their best to keep themselves and Eleanor out of the conflict, but failed, as the two parents seemed to expect their children to prefer one of them over the other and take sides.
When Eleanor was nine, sixteen-year-old Bert ran away from home. In the cataclysmic fight trying to pin the blame, Myra blurted out the truth: Eleanor wasn't Richard's child. Richard exploded, and for the first time in his life beat his wife. Frightened and furious, Myra left in the dead of night, taking Eleanor with her. They bought tickets to the first train available, and by chance ended up in New York City. Destitute and desperate, Myra moved into a small tenement in the Bronx with her daughter.
Myra works to pay the rent as a waitress in a Bronx restaurant. She is often in a state of depression and is unhappy with life. Eleanor began selling papers at age thirteen to try and help her family's financial situation. She knows of the bleak circumstances she and her mother have fallen into, and pines to see her brothers again.
Hair Color: Brown
Hair Style: Medium length, usually tied at the nape of her neck, away from her face.
Eye Color: Brown
Skin Color: Tanned
Height: 5' 4"
Weight: Fairly slim.
Personality: Nellie is overall a very kind girl with a sarcastic, broad sense of humor. She loves to laugh, and takes kindly to everyone. She's usually mild-mannered, but if someone gets her mad enough she can be a fighter. She's independent, loves being surrounded by friends, and can stand her ground at any time. Confidant and brazen, she sometimes slips up and says the wrong thing, or ends up embarrassing herself. She is slightly moody at times, and gets upset easily.
Clothing Style: Although she makes a living selling papers, Nellie prefers to wear a blouse and skirt. She never saw the appeal of wearing boys' clothes and found no reason to. Her clothing is usually far from elegant, but she has a clean look to her.
Items owned: Nellie has very little personal items owned. She only has a worn photograph of her and her brothers, the only remembrance she has of them.
Troubles: Nellie wants to help her mother, but is often distanced and estranged from her. It often bothers her that she doesn't know where her brothers are.
Fears: Destitution, abandonment.
Siblings:
Bert Lope, 23 (Unknown)
Jeremiah Lope, 20 (Detroit?)
Parents:
Myra Lope
Richard Lope (Detroit)
