Carter was so upset; he refused to return to school, and stayed working as a newsie.
Carter loves his family, but doesn't spend a lot of time with them. He stays outside as much as he can, but doesn't talk to people unless he has to. He spends most of his time at the river when he is not working. Carter's family worries about him because he still feels so much pain from his sister's death. They sometimes make Jack go with him when he sells his papers, and that always gets him home faster than when Jack isn't with him.
