(I use this character on 1899 as well; I hope bringing her here is not a problem.)
Full Name: Mabel Anne Fitzpatrick.
Newsie name: No Newsie name to speak of; if Mabel were ever to accept a nickname, she would need to fully accept her current circumstances—something she cannot bring herself to do.
Name origin: Not applicable.
Age: 18.
Gender: Female.
Birthplace: Valley Falls in Renssellaer, New York.
Currently Living: Manhattan Lodging House in New York City, New York. Her family now occupies a small apartment likewise located in Manhattan.
History:
The daughter of a well-to-do business man, Mabel spent the entirety of her childhood in a sprawling estate in a rural area outside of New York City. Until quite recently, Mabel knew nothing of hardship and lived a life of undisturbed simplicity and indulgence.
Her father, while a kind and doting father, was a very reserved man when it came to his fortune. The nature of Mr. Fitzpatrick’s business was not something that was talked about. At age fifteen, Mabel was betrothed to the son of a family friend of equal wealth. He was a pleasant and agreeable young man and Mabel was complacent with the engagement. Though Mabel was unsure she had any romantic feelings for him, she was equally unsure that it mattered. The engagement, however, fell apart six months later after a heated argument between fathers. Her father refused to go into any detail regarding the argument and Mabel never saw her husband-to-be again. Years passed and money slowly began to go missing; the Fitzpatrick family was slowly becoming heavily indebted. Mabel, however, was blissfully unaware of the family's financial instability.
Less than a year prior, Mabel’s father lost most of his fortune to several botched business endeavors and the Fitzpatrick family was forced to move from their estate to a New York City apartment complex in Manhattan. Mabel was altogether shocked by this turn of events and couldn’t fathom leaving their estate forever. Though her parents had previously been able to provide for Mabel, money is tight and it is of the utmost necessity that Mabel finds herself a job. Mabel, while not thrilled with the prospect of taking part in this “working” thing she has heard so much about, is willing to give it a shot, if only for the good of her family. Though it seems unlikely that Mr. Fitzpatrick will ever regain his lost fortune, Mabel remains devout in her belief that she will soon be back in her lavish home, playing piano or reading a book from her prized library. Besides, Mabel was never much of a city girl.
Mabel has been in the Manhattan Lodging House for six months now, but, for better or for worse, keeps to herself. If ever the bunk room looks suspiciously clean, it’s probably because Mabel tidied up in a moment of obsessive compulsiveness.
Hair Color: Brown.
Hair Style: Fine and long, Mabel often will wear her hair back in a braid to keep cool while selling. Her bangs do not fair well in the city’s humidity and tend to curl and become piece-y by day’s end.
Eye Color: Brown.
Skin Color: A pale complexion the becomes red and splotchy when hot or embarrassed. She also has a smattering of freckles across the bridge of her nose.
Height: 5’3”.
Weight: Waif-like with a more boyish figure than she might like.
Clothing Style: Typically blouses and skirts, some which reflect the luxury of her life prior to becoming a newsgirl and some which are beginning to look a little worse for wear. She also dons a wide-brimmed sunhat with a blue silk ribbon to keep the sun out of her eyes. It’s moderately ridiculous, but Mabel adores it.
Items owned: Mabel has a collection of books saved from her old home’s library, a leather-bound diary and an embroidered handkerchief to keep her earnings in. She has a good many knick-knacks that, while useless, are kept for posterity’s sake. Her belongings are either kept in a leather bag beneath her bunk or hidden beneath her cot.
Troubles: Mabel does not know how to cope with a life where everything is not provided for her. Though she is well read and impeccably book smart, she lacks the knowledge necessary to “rough it”. She isn’t good with money and, if wandering Fifth Avenue, she has a penchant to blow all of her savings while window shopping. She also makes notoriously bad first impressions.
Fears:
-Irrational: bodies of water larger than a bath-tub (Mabel cannot swim), most insects, and occasionally heights.
-Rational: That she'll never find her niche in life, having to come to terms with her current circumstances, living in poverty.
Siblings: Anne Fitzpatrick; 24, left home to attend university and has been gone ever since, currently engaged to a wealthy British man; Mabel and Anne used to write one another often, but Anne has become distant since the news of her engagement became public.
Parents: Henry Fitzpatrick, Elizabeth Fitzpatrick (both living in a Manhattan apartment; Henry, in recent weeks, has begun to disappear for days at a time—Mabel’s mother is assured that he is trying to rekindle his business career, while is behavior is beginning to suggest something seedier.)
