(Margaret is based off of Helga Pataki from the 90’s Nickelodeon series, Hey, Arnold. I hope that’s alright!)
Full Name: Margaret Eleanor Burns
Newsie Name Nickname: As she isn’t a news-girl, Margaret doesn’t have a newsie name. She does, however, have a nickname. Her siblings were the ones who first began referring to her as “Marge” and, despite introducing herself as “Margaret,” nearly everyone she meets seems to call her by the unwanted nickname. She has yet to figure out how everyone seems to pick up the nickname, but they do. She hates being called “Marge” and corrects people when they refer to her as such, but it’s rare for someone to listen.
Name Origin: N/A (Unless you mean “Marge,” which is a nickname taken from her first name.)
Age: 17
Gender: Female
Birthplace: Bayshore, New York
Currently Living: Manhattan, New York
History: Margaret was born in a small town in Suffolk County on Long Island to Louise and Thomas Burns. She is the fourth eldest child in a family of seven and, being the middle child, is often ignored. Family life at the Burns’ household is not functional, to say the least. Louise is supposed to be a “recovering alcoholic,” but everyone in the family knows very well that she isn’t “recovering” at all. Thomas, though not an alcoholic, is a work-a-holic and is rarely at home. When he is, his focus is solely on eating supper and sitting on the couch. He often mistakes Margaret for one of her siblings when speaking to her. It’s because of this that Margaret is easily offended should someone forget her name. Thomas and Louise don’t appear to have a splendid relationship with each other, though the Burns children (aside from Margaret) choose to ignore this and act as if everything is fine. Margaret avoids being around her family, preferring to be out of the house or, if unable to go out, in her room, writing poetry or reading.
Margaret’s personality is a sour one, which clashes with the sunny disposition of her siblings. She has a strong resentment toward her family and the lack of positive attention from them. Margaret tends to take out her frustration on others. She’s almost always angry and is bossy, loud, and has a very apparent mean streak. She dislikes talking about her personal life and becomes very defensive when asked about it. On the topic of her family, she generally speaks about them as if she could care less, though it’s very apparent that she is not “living the fine life” at home. Despite being outwardly mean, Margaret isn’t truly a bad person. Deep down, she’s an almost-good person, who just wants a little appreciation.
Margaret has a good head on her shoulders, even though her education may not have been “tip-top.” She’s very emotional, a trait she prefers to keep to herself. Should there ever be a time of panic or crisis, it’s more than likely that Margaret will be the first to break down in hysterics. (Were this a Titanic RPG, you can guess who’d be the first to start flinging small children aside to get to a life-boat.)
She is often found lingering about where newsies are. She claims that the reason she does this is because their lives are sadder than her’s and she needs something to cheer her up. But, in all fairness, she does buy newspapers from whichever newsie she’s chosen to taunt and tips nicely every now and again.
Hair Color: A light, sort of mousey brown shade
Hair Style: Margaret is not phenomenally creative with her hair styling and usually wears it pulled back or down. Sometimes it’s curled- that depends on whether or not she’s interested in putting in curlers before going to sleep.
Eye Color: Blue
Skin Color: She is fair-skinned, though, luckily, she doesn’t burn too easily.
Height: 5’4”
Weight: Margaret is of average weight for her age and height.
Clothing Style: Margaret wears either dresses or a blouse and skirt. The majority of her clothes are very plain (your’s would be too if you were one out of seven children born to lower-middle class parents).
Items owned: She owns a fair amount of clothes, though most of them are old dresses and blouses that once belonged to her older sister, Charlotte. In addition to clothes, Margaret has several books and notebooks, in which she enjoys writing poetry. Any other small items are ones that were passed down from older siblings.
Troubles: Margaret’s home-life is her main trouble and source of frustration, though she is very reluctant to outwardly admit it.
Fears: Severe moments of panic, rejection, being alone for the rest of her life, never receiving affection, and she finds pigeons to be quite worrisome.
Siblings: Robert (23, married and living with his wife, Caroline), Roy (21, looking for an apartment, but still residing at home), Charlotte (19), Elisabeth (15), William (14), and Mary-Anne (11)
Parents: Thomas and Louise Burns
