Age: 16
Gender: Female
Birthplace: Manhattan, NY
Currently Living: Manhattan, NY
History:
Simply put, Winni was found in a stable with her older brother. That's why they decided to call her Winni when they found her. The NYPD were baffled when they found the baby girl lying in a pile of hay in a stable where a crime had been reported earlier that day, and a two year old boy with her. They had caught wind that a band of beggars, or gypsies, were hiding out illegally in there a few weeks back, but only rushed to the scene when the place caught fire.
Once they had put out the flames and began to explore the wreckage, they discovered the baby girl in the part of the stable that wasn't as badly burned, lying in a pile of hay with her two year old brother. The original plan was to send them to the orphanage like protocol demanded of them, but one of the police men couldn't stand to see that happen.
Officer Miles Blackthorne, who had recently lost his wife and only daughter to a fire himself, took the two in with him. He named her Winni, firstly, because his wife's name had been Winifred, but secondly because she had been found in a stable – and it just fit her. The boy he named after himself. Miles raised her alright, but didn't have the motherly qualities that she needed. In other words, she grew up learning how to be a hard boiled street boy, like her brother. Even though she was a cops daughter, she got into her fair share of trouble.
Even as a toddler, child, preteen, and eventually young lady, she has always hung around the neighboring Newsboys with her brother, Miles. She, her brother and her father reside in a small apartment on Duane street, in Manhattan, and since the newsies lodging house is located on that street as well, she is constantly in contact with them.
Ever since she was little, she would be stuck inside the apartment, waiting for her father to come home, and she would hear them outside her window playing in the streets in their free time and calling out headlines when they worked. Soon, her brother became a newsie, and she grew tired of always being stuck inside waiting for her father to get home, and her brother to come in, and so she would leave and play with the newsies outside. When Miles would come home from his patrol, he would find her playing with them, and eventually he just let his restless daughter run loose.
Hard times hit the small family of three when Winni was ten years old. Her father, Miles, was wrongly accused by his fellow officer of a petty crime, and was relieved of his duties. They no longer had an income, and the hardest time of year was fast approaching; Winter. Times were always hard during winter, but with no money, things were worse.
They were evicted from their small apartment that November. They were allowed to stay in the newsies lodging house on the street for a while, being good friends with the caretaker. Winni began selling papers for a small bit of money, and Miles and her father looked for work. When January came, her father still hadn't found anything, but had heard of a job for the railroad company. It would take him around the country and he would be gone away from Winni and Miles for months at a time, but it had to be done.
He left in February.
Winni continued on being a newsie with her brother Miles, getting to see her father every three months. One day, when she was fourteen, she and Miles were waiting for their father in the same place and same time as usual, but he never showed up. Winni frantically searched for him for days, going to that spot at that time every day for the next three months in the hopes that he would one day reappear to her. She knew something must have happened to him, because she was sure he would never just leave her, no matter how hard times got.
Her worries were confirmed however in late April, when a letter arrived for her and Miles stating that her father had been killed in an accident. She was devastated for months, pushing everyone that had been in her life out, except for Miles. He was all she had left.
A year later, she began to let people back in. She was fifteen.
Now she is sixteen, and has let go of what has happened in her life. She lives in the lodging house with her eighteen year old brother, Miles, who is currently looking for a real job, and is extremely protective of her.
Life is alright.
