A Joker original
Real Name: Benny Colton
Newsie name: Casper
Name origin: When Casper came to live with the midtown Newsies, he was so sickly that his entire body had gone pale. The newsies nicknamed him Casper, and the name stuck – even after he regained his tanned coloring when the sickness had run its course.
Age: 20
Gender: Male
Birthplace: Idaho
Currently Living: Midtown, NY
History: Benny was born as poor as it gets. His mother was a dirt poor rape victim that handed him off the moment he came into the world. He had no name until he was 5 years old, when the orphanage gave him away to an unmarried rancher, who needed him as help on the farm. He lived with this hard, brutal, overdriving man, taking on his last name of Colton. He was more a servant than a son to Jack Colton, and wasn’t even aloud to sleep in the same house as him. He slept in the barn. As a result of this, he grew very strong from the hard work, and grew into a young man.
On Benny’s sixteenth birthday, Jack had a heart attack. Benny had loved the man in a way as his father, but wasn’t heart broken that he died. In Jacks will, he left Benny only one thing; His pocket watch. The rest was to be burned to the ground by Benny himself. Benny did as instructed, taking the watch and then burning the homestead to the ground.
He decided to move East. There was nothing for him to stay for. With a little homegrown food that was still left over from the burnt crops, his pocket watch, and the clothes on his back, he left for the East Coast. He had had enough of the country, and was ready for the city. In the city was where things happened, and where you could be your own person. That’s what he wanted.
He hitched a ride on a wagon headed to Tennessee, and from there, he hopped on board a train headed to Pennsylvania. He stayed in Pennsylvania until he was seventeen, working in a flower mill, and then decided to head into New York City. He couldn’t find work for the first two months living there, and was forced to sleep on the streets. It was the dead of winter while he was there, and he soon came down with something bad.
He began to look for someplace that would take him in until he could find work to pay them off, and came across the Manhattan Newsies. They took him in, and, seeing his pale skin, frost bitten clothes, and snow flecked hair, named him Casper. They took care of him until he was better.
One day, there was a fight. It was a fight between the Manhattan Newsies and a man named Mike D. Greaser. Casper was soon caught into it, fighting on Manhattan’s side. Though he was strong, he was still a bit ill and recovering from his sickness. He was hit hard, knocking him out cold. He tumbled down into a gutter, and no one saw him. The Manhattan Newsies had only seen one thing – Greaser beaming one of there own boys across the head so hard that it killed him. That was all they had needed to hold a grudge against him. The midtown Newsies came for Casper after the fight, and brought him to Midtown where they nursed him back to health, hoping to get information from him.
They were out of luck though. Casper lost his memory from the blow, and couldn’t remember anything but his name. He joined Midtown blindly, not knowing the reason in which they now fought Manhattan (a place unfamiliar to him). He became one of them.
