History:
In one swift motion, the stool from under his feet had been kicked from under him, and his body was dangling lifelessly above the platform where Russian townsfolk stood cheering. A woman with dirty skin and oily, copper, red hair in a raggedy black dress let out a shriek of despair from the noose around her neck in the village square, as she looked upon the now lifeless face of her husband. With the tears streaming down her face, she turned her head to the small boy who stood in the front of the crowd holding the hand of a smaller child. His features were much like her own. He had her deep brown eyes and thick yet elegant eyebrows. His nose was chiseled in the same manner as hers too, and he had the same constant glimmer of a smile playing on his lips. The only thing different was his hair. His hair was as dark and tangled as his fathers.
The child he held the hand of was a girl. She had her mothers copper, red hair and her fathers green eyes. Even in her youthful age of 4, she was a beautiful child. Her name was Ivy. She was the last child of the Emerson’s.
His mother yelled “Find freedom in America!” in English, before the stool she stood on, also was kicked beneath her. The young, seven year old boy whose name was Vincent and the not yet 5 year old girl named Ivy, let out a mangled cry in unison as both of their parents now danced from nooses.
What had they done to deserve such a punishment? They had stolen food for their young son to live, because they were taxed more than they could pay and could not afford food. They were hung, for taking care of their child.
The mother, Nina Karkoffka, was a native Russian who fell in love with the young American named Wayne Emerson. Wayne was sick of his little life in Baltimore, and wanted to explore the world. He had no family, and was ready to try things in a new country. In his travels, he found his way to Russia where he met the beautiful Nina Karkoffka – daughter of the richest man in town, and also the meanest. He did not approve of the marriage and cast her out of his family when they got married anyways. From then on, he has been trying his hardest to make things as difficult as possible for them to live. Now, he has finally succeeded in killing them both. He was unaware that they had a son and daughter.
Vincent took Ivy to the nearest train, they hopped board, and hopped off at the ship yard somewhere in France, where they waited for an opportunity to board a ship to America. For the three months that they waited, they slept under a dock in large abandoned rowboat. Luckily for them, the rowboat was filled with a supply of fish, raw beans, and stale bread. It could have lasted them until the next year at least if the rationed. During the cold French nights, they slept in the rowboat under a tarp, laying on a bed of dead fish and bread. During the day, they would wander around the ship yards and along the coast lines in search of loose money and more food.
One night, three months after their arrival in France, a ship came. It was an American ship filled with Soldiers. The soldiers were dropped off, and more picked up. After a week of them being at port there, Vincent and Ivy found themselves a way onto the ship, and hid. They departed, and were soon on their long, gruesome way to America. They hid in the barrel of trash and left over food for a week, drinking water that was left over from the soldiers and thrown into the barrel next to theirs. The barrels were so closely packed, that one could cut a hole through one – and it would give them easy access into the one beside it. That was how they got their water. They were packed together in the uncomfortable little, foul smelling space for a week. Ivy became ill from the stench, mixed with left over dirty water, and also with sea sickness, and they soon both found themselves sitting in, not only the trash and their food, but also mixed in with her sick. Not only that, but they had been forced to both relieve themselves in that barrel too.
The smell began to get to the soldiers and they soon found the cause. They were very kind to the two of them, taking pity on them, and the rest of the voyage went much smoother. They were both given a comfortable little cot to share, and food rations as well as new clothes and a sea water bath. Ivy continued to be sick the whole rest of the way, but it was only sea sickness.
They finally arrived at a port off the coast of the Carolina’s, and the children unsteadily left the ship. It was such a different climate then they were used to. They were used to the frigid cold, and snow, while here, it was so hot you could melt. Vincent fainted from dehydration often in their journey, and Ivy often couldn’t breath from the thickness of the air. Vincent decided that they would go North, where it was colder. The two traveled north, hitchhiking where they could, but walking most of the way.
A year later, they found themselves hungry, exhausted, and ready to quit in New York City. They wandered around – finding themselves in the shabby area of Midtown, and were soon drawn into the newsie life. The newsies of midtown nicknamed him Midnight for his hair color, and Ivy they called Copper, for her hair.
