Joseph was born into a poor farming family in Ireland. He was the youngest of five older brothers, and his mother had died giving birth to him - which made him the best candidate for the older boys to beat up on. He was always the one who got stuck doing the worst chores and had the worst clothes. Everything was a hand-me-down from his brothers, and totally worn out. Joseph didn't enjoy this abuse from his family, but he tolerated it.
The only thing he did not tolerate, was when they used him as a punching bag. He would then begin to punch back. Soon, he became a much better fist fighter then his brothers, and they started to leave him alone physically, but still tormented him verbally.
The land that the O'Dell's worked, did not belong to them. It belonged to the landlord Mr. Olborg. They worked it for him, then were forced to pay rent to be living on it, and then had to give half of the crops they earned to him. Pretty shitty deal, eh? By the time Joseph was 18, they were behind in their rent, and it was a bad season for crops. Joseph was working in the field when he saw smoke in the distance. He ran to their cottage, only to find it burned to the ground, and his family lined up. Their were twenty some-odd men with pistols aimed at them. Joseph hid behind the bush, unable to do anything for them. They all pulled the trigger at the same time, and each O'Dell fell to the ground in unison.
Intent on taking revenge on Mr. Olborg, Joseph took his fathers very old rifle from out of the rubble after they had gone, and set off across the land to find Mr. Olborg, and shoot him. After about a weeks walk, he came to the giant manor, but was unable to kill him. As he took his shot, the gun backfired and knocked him out, burning his fingers. Unknown to the Olborg family that he had been trying to kill them, they took him into their home and mended him up.
When he became conscience again, he met their daughter, Erin. She felt stifled and wanted to escape to America, and soon drew him into her plot. She would need a strong boy to help her along her journey, and he would need the money for safe passage. So, with her money, and with his protection, they set off for America, escaping the Olborg's.
Once they arrived, they parted ways, and Joseph set off to find himself a job. He accidentally happened upon a boxing club, and bumped into (quite accidentally) the champion. The champion insulted him, and he punched him. Joseph, not knowing he was the champion, punched him back - and they began to fight. Joseph won the fight. The owner of the club had been watching and offered him lodging and a job. He would stay in a tenement, and then he would box for the crowds entertainment at night. He took it. He has boxing their ever since.
