Chloe stared off into the starlit horizon. No, they weren't stars - they were lights. City lights. She was finally back.
The ship railing was slippery with stale salt water, and Chloe's single dress was caked with dry salt, sweat, and grime. The only way she could afford passage on the ship was if she promised to work - and they worked her hard. Chloe was a changed woman. She had left New York - trying to run away from her troubles - but they had only succeeded in catching up with her back in Australia. Her father had gone mad while she had been away, and upon her homecoming, had tried to stab her with a pair of her mothers old sewing scissors.
Chloe had been injured. She had never felt so much pain before. Physically, she had been stabbed in the back with scissors, and had been in a recuperation home for 10 months. Mentally, she had been stabbed in the heart by her family. She had abandoned them, she knew, but she had expected them to still want her. She was wrong.
Alot can change a girl in 10 months. Chloe had changed. She had changed immensely.
The ship finally anchored at the docks of her beloved New York, and she descended to the land. It was late - too late for newsies to be out and about - and very few people lingered on the docks. It was a dangerous place to be in after dark. Chloe shivered, feeling afraid for the first time in her life in New York. It was her home, but it wasn't. She had no home anymore.
A single tear made its way down her face as she began her walk up the Dock. Where would she go? She had no place. Suddenly, someone grabbed her shoulder.

Shadow felt abandoned. His best friend, his own twin brother abandoned him. Left him. Chance left him. Without his brother, Shadow had no one, well...Shadow has no one now. He was alone now, even more alone than before. He wondered what he did wrong, what did he do that was so bad in order for his own brother to leave him?
He now spent most of his days in Brooklyn. Why? Because he felt like it. He was sick of seeing the same sights in Harlem, he didn't like Queens, and Chance told him to stay away from Manhattan. Chance didn't want to be seen with him again, and he made that very clear. He still lived in a slummy area of Harlem, but Brooklyn helped him escape.
It was getting late, it should be time for Shadow to go back to Harlem. He got up from where he was sitting in an alleyway and headed out to the main street. Was he afraid? No. What was there to fear? Even death didn't scare him. If he died, no one would miss him. He didn't have anyone to live for. He figured the rest of his life he would spend alone, just observing people, envying them for leading such happy lives, while he was miserable.
Shadow glanced over to where the docks were, and did a double take. Was that Chloe Hawkins standing there on the dock? He made his way to the docks. Its been forever since he last heard from her. He didn't know if her and Chance were still together. Probably not, seeing that she just got off a boat. He came up behind her and put his hand on her shoulder, "Chloe?" He asked.

Chloe jumped at the sound of her name and the hand on her shoulder. She turned slowly, and painfully around to face...Chance? No. It wasn't Chance. It was unmistakably Shadow. Chloe felt an odd sense of relief flood over her at his presence. She just wanted to fall into him in exhaustion right then and there - but she was unsure of how he he felt about seeing her again.
"Hello Shadow." she said in a hoarse voice. She wanted to cry, or scream out in agony. Her back was searing with pain - as it had a habit of doing when she felt emotional, or bad weather was drifting in. She felt broken. Like a wild horse that had been once full of spirit - she had been captured, beaten, and broken.
Chloe couldn't stand it anymore. She was sick of being strong. Being brave was overrated anyways. She wanted to be the weak woman for once in her life. She wanted to cry. So, she did. The floodgates opened and she stood there awkwardly, just sobbing in silence. Her head was bowed and her arms wrapped around herself, as if to help hold the bandages that engulfed her torso in place.
She was in a battle against life at that moment, and life was winning.
((kinda sucky.))

"Hello Shadow.""Hello Chloe." He said, "And uh, welcome back?" He smiled sheepishly. Chloe looked almost the same physically, her hair was still brown, and she was still the same height, but something was different. The once vibrant personality was gone, her eyes didn't sparkle like they used to. They seemed dead. Shadow's brow furrowed, "What's wrong?" He asked. That's when she started crying. Great, just coming into my depressing presence made her cry. He thought. His first instinct was to just take her in his arms and tell her everything would be okay. But he couldn't do that, now could he? Chloe was now like a stranger. He knew her as a strong woman, there was no way the old Chloe would do this. Something must of happened while she was gone, that is if she even left. He was confused. What happened to her? ((Eh..mine flat out sucks. ))

"Whats wrong?"
Chloe didn't even know where to begin. Her life had been turned upside down in a matter of months, and the only family she had ever needed didn't even notice she had left New York. Her father had tried to kill her, and her sisters all hated her. Life could get worse, she knew.
She took a few deep, shuddering breaths, and began her tale;
"I went home. Or i thought it was home. But no sooner had i walked in the door when i was kicked out. My family hates me and its all my fault. My father tried to kill me. I didn't know what else to do, so i came back here...I don't know where to go..." she said between choking sobs.
She felt like passing out. She could already see the spots swirling around in front of her eyes, and the dizziness overpowering her. She started to shiver and sweat, and things started to go fuzzy and buzz. She could feel herself falling in slow motion, and felt nauseous. Was she sea sick? No, she was passing out. Was it from the pain? Maybe. She sank, what seemed to her, very slowly to the ground, until she was in a curled up, fetal position - her back searing in protest.
"I'm so scared." she whispered.

Shadow didn't understand how families could do that. When the whole world despised you, your family was supposed to be there. Well, that's what he thought anyways, but the recent events with Chance made him think otherwise. Families meant nothing now, he didn't have one now, he didn't have anything. He felt terrible for Chloe. Her father tried to kill her, her family hates her, and now she doesn't know what to do or where to go. He didn't feel like he could say anything, what could he say? "I'm so sorry, Chloe..." He said, "That's terrible, I'm sorry it happened."
"I'm so scared."
He looked at her, he couldn't blame her. If his father tried to kill him, and if his family hated him, he'd be scared too. Shadow glanced down, and she was starting to sink to the ground. What was going on? Was she dying? No, she seemed fine a minute ago. What was happening? That's when she said the three words he never thought he would hear her say, 'I'm so scared'. He got down beside her, not really caring that the dock was wet, it was raining earlier, getting wetter wouldn't kill him. "Its okay, everything will be okay." He made sure to look in her eyes so she would hopefully believe him. "I promise."
