"The shadows hide a lot of things..." Street said quietly, watching him carefully. "They show me what I hide from. That's why I don't like ta see them. There are awful things in them shadows... Things I don't understand. A lot of people are afraid of the dark, ya know. The librarian told me it's not so much the dark, but the unknown. Aren't ya ever afraid of the unknown that's in the shadows? I mean, ya never know what's there, right around the corner. It could be a bull, or another kid, or an orphanage matron with grey hair comin' ta talk ya back so ya can work for her..." Street smiled sadly. "I hate the night, it's so sad for me."
Thad looked into her grey eyes. "The shadows, they don't bother me. I don't fear the night or the unknown. I use it to hide myself from the world. I use it to escape. At night I can relax. No one is gonna bug me at night. I've never really thought about what else lurks in the shadows. I guess I just figure they are people like me who want to ignore the world for a while. It's fun at night because you're mind plays tricks on you. It's a thrill. Sometimes I sit and just watch the darkness. Then, I think I see something moving in it, but yet there is nothing there. It's all in your head," Thad stopped and thought for a moment, "Fear isn't real. It is made up by a person's imagination. It's nothing more than a thought. You create it with your mind; you can destroy it."
He glanced out the window for a moment. "I can walk you back to Brooklyn if you want since it's dark and all. I wouldn't want you to have to go alone," he said looking back at Street.

Street blinked rapidly. She had never thought of that. "I can destroy it?" She asked wonderingly. "I will try, I suppose. After all, I'm not gonna let those at the top destroy me, so why should I let the things that don't exist?"
He glanced out the window for a moment. "I can walk you back to Brooklyn if you want since it's dark and all. I wouldn't want you to have to go alone," he said looking back at Street.
Street thought about it. "I guess it would be alright... But what about ya? Where are ya gonna sleep? Do ya stay at a Lodgin' House?" She asked carefully.

Thad nodded, "Exactly." He was proud of himself. For once something he said made sense and sounded smart. It was true though. That was something he had learned a long time ago.
"I guess it would be alright... But what about ya? Where are ya gonna sleep? Do ya stay at a Lodgin' House?" She asked carefully.
"No...I'm not a lodging house kind of person," Thad grinned. He stared out the window again watching the people that were slowly disappearing as night came on. "I stay in a number of places. The park for one. Sometimes I go to a back alley down the road a ways here where some other homeless folks stay. Tonight though I think I will sleep by this old abandoned building. It provides good shelter from the wind and snow," Thad shrugged. "We should be goin' though shouldn't we; before it gets too dark I mean."

Street tilted her head. "I suppose. I'm kinda sad though. What if I wake up tamorrow and this was all a dream? I think I might cry from the disappointment." Street said, smiling slightly.
She nodded. "Yeah, just hold on a minute, yeah?" Then she bent down, undid the laces on his boots and handed them to him. "Thanks, that means the world ta me, ya know. Honest!" She said, grinning openly now. "Now, shall we go?" She asked, waiting for him to speak.

Thad nodded,"I know what you mean. This was the best I've had in God knows how long. It seems like a dream but it's not see..." Thad pinched his arm. "Ow. See not a dream. Besides you know where to find me and I know where to find you so I will see you again- soon I hope," he smiled.

"It was nothing," Thad said taking the boots back, "It's the least I could do." He slipped the boots on his feet and tied them tight. Thad stood. "C'mon," he smiled and put his hand out to help Street up.

Street laughed. "Nope, not a dream." Street knew what he meant, she didn't really know anyone around the city and what would the chances be that she had come in contact with a kindred spirit. After that, Street realized she read way too much. She took his hand and stood. "Alright. Inta the snow!" She said, sounding like a heroine about to go to her death.

"Alright. Inta the snow!" She said, sounding like a heroine about to go to her death.
"Into the snow," Thad repeated what Street said. As he pulled open the door two jingle bells tied on the handle rang. A wind blew in their faces as they stepped outside.
It was mostly dark now. Thad looked up to the sky. It was dotted with stars. Some bright some dim. An almost full moon was half hidden behind some clouds from which fluffy white snow was falling still. Thad looked back at the street. Lots of people were in for the night and not too many were still roaming the streets at this time. He looked down. In front of him were shoe prints. He wondered whose they were. That always fascinated him.
Thad looked around. He'd never been to Brooklyn. In fact he'd hardly left the Bronx since getting to the city. He'd been to Manhattan once or twice, but that was about it. Wandering the city other than the part he was familiar with scared him a bit. Thad looked at Street. "So uh...wich way is it now?" he gave a little chuckle at his stupidity.

They stepped into the snow. The wind was cold... Street noted it was very beautiful, but still, the dark loomed in her mind. She felt her hands begin to shake, but clamped them tightly. Street looked to the stars, she wondered which one was hers. The librarian had told her everyone had a star that guided them, they just had to find it.
Thad looked at Street. "So uh...wich way is it now?" he gave a little chuckle at his stupidity.
Street smiled, she looked around. "See them lights over there? The ones that are reflectin' off the water? That's Brooklyn. We have ta cross the Bridge and go down underneath it, all the others will already be there. I hope they didn't take my spot..." Street said, more to herself now. "Well, anyways, off we go!"

Thad looked at the lights reflecting on the water. It was really pretty. "Seems like it would be a nice place to stay." Thad remarked. He knew it was better than just the streets. He thought about the warm cabin back in Pennsylvania where he once stayed. Then he looked at Street. He would much rather be here in New York freezing and knowing that someone cared than back at home with his drunk uncle.
Street had mention other people that stayed under the bridge too. "How many other folks ya got that stay with ya?" Thad asked as they walked. The light fluffy snow still came down. He looked behind them. it was falling so fast that the tracks they had just made were barely visible

"How many other folks ya got that stay with ya?" Thad asked as they walked.
"They don't stay with me, they just, stay there and we all coincide." Street murmured. "There's about five regular boys that stay, there was a girl but I think she got married, and there was that one boy who got killed by the police when they raided. Other then that, there are people who just pass through. They're there long enough for ya ta notice them, but not enough ta get ta know them." Street said. "I've been there the longest. I guess it's my own turf, ya know?" She laughed.

"Yeah I see. Sounds interestin'," Thad nodded. The lights were getting closer, and the snow was finally slowing down. With the wind blowing harder and the sun no longer shining it felt even colder than it had been earlier. Thad thought he saw something moving ahead of them but ignored it. He was sure it was just his mind playing tricks on him. "That wind sure is wicked," he said pulling his jacket closer to him.

"'Som'thin' wicked this way comes,'" Street grinned cheerfully, faking a bad English accent. "I seen the wind blow harder. The worst is when the snow and ice melt and the river surges, it almost flooded us out last winter." Street commented, glancing at him sideways.

Thad laughed at Streets English accent. She was quite a character. Unlike most of the homeless kids he'd met here Street had a good education. "It really almost flood ya out?" Thad asked a Street told of the river. "Bet that was scary. I saw a river flood faster than you could blink back in Pennsylvania. It had rained a week strait and the rain was still comin' down. I decided to go fishin' and next thing i knew I was standin' in ankle deep water. Good think I got myself out of there. If I hadn't the river would have swallowed me whole!" Thad said wide eyed. He stared off into the distance as he recalled the event.

"Sure did! Carried off the perfect blanket too! It was thick and washed easy and dried so quickly!" Street listened to his tale, her eyes wide. "That must've been scary! I probably would've gone crazy with fright!" Street shook her head. "That would've been horrible if ya had been carried away by the river..."

Thad chuckled a little as Street told of the blanket, and it's greatness. It did sound nice. He'd give anything for a decent blanket to keep him warm at night. "It was scary," he admitted. "I didn't have time to panic though. I just knew I had to get away from the river so that's what I did. It woulda been horrible if I would have gotten carried away. Just think that had happened I wouldn't even be here with ya right now," Thad thought of how terrible that would be.
