The Brooklyn Bridge had always amazed Thad. The structure of it was incredible to him. He remembered when he'd first gotten here and seen it in the distance, it had taken his breath away. He'd never been this close to it before. It's silhouette toward over the river in the darkness. The moon lit the sky above it made it seem enchanted. A few snow flurries still fell added to the effect. Standing next to the massive bride he felt small. Sure he felt that way beside the big buildings in the city, but this was different. The bridge was a wonder to him. It looked so strong standing silently in the night.
"It's so big," he said in awe. He would have loved to see it being built. That must have been something. The skill it would have taken. The whole concept amazed him. "Ya know, there are all them rich folk that live in their mansions and think they have the best houses in the world. If ya really think about it this here bridge is a mansion of your own Street. I think it is the nicest mansion in this city to tell ya the truth," Thad said smiling.

Street sighed with happiness when she spotted the bridge. It was her home, after all. She knew the Bridge like the back of her hand. Why once, she had even seen a man jump off it and live!

"It is big, but it's also kinda small too." Street said. "It can get crowded durin' the summer months..." Street sighed. "I never looked at it that way. I suppose you're right. It is my own little mansion. Just without the windows, doors, and lightin' fixtures." Street said, laughing. "But yeah, this Bridge is the best home in the world."
Street kicked some snow, enjoying the way the snow sparkled in the light. "Ya know, I never thought about it before, but... What do ya think them rich people think about when they see the Bridge? Or when they see the kids like us in the streets...?" She wondered.

Thad thought for a moment. "I guarantee the look right past the bridge. They don't appreciate it or much else so it seems. They don't see it's beauty or it's magnificence. Just like a lot of them don't see how beautiful the snow is when it sparkles in the light," He said. "When they see us I really don't know what they think. Maybe some of them feel bad, but i bet that most of them don't. I think a lot of them don't even see us. It's like we just blend into the background of the city; like we are just there, but we don't have meaning," he went on sadly.

"Yeah. I bet one day people aren't gonna believe that we all came from the streets. We're all gonna be big and powerful. That'll show 'em." Street nodded. "How can ya not see the Bridge, it's huge!" She laughed. "I love the snow in the light, and the water too." She pointed to the city reflecting on the surface of the river. "It's one city on top of another."

Thad looked at the river and the reflection of the city. "It sure is pretty. There ain't nothin' really like it."

"They'll never guess we came from the bottom, 'cause they won't wanna believe it. They'll wanna believe that we're just like them, ya know?" She tilted her head.
"There isn't anythin' like it at all. It's a wonder, really, that mere humans can make somethin' so wonderful and splendid." Street sighed, gazing at the city, with its' lights. "So magical, like one of them fairy-tale books I read once. I didn't really like them though, I thought that I should read somethin' that was real life. I really like that Oliver Twist book. It's just like us, honest!" She giggled cheerfully.

"It is a wonder. Us humans are remarkable creatures to be able to do such things," Thad said in awe starring at the city. "Oliver Twist, huh?" Thad smirked, "I'll have to read it sometime since it's just like us and all." In truth he wasn't sure if he would. He wasn't the reading type, but he just might try it.

"Why thank you, fine sir." Street said, bowing and smiling. "I still can't get them southern accents down quite right..." She murmured. "It helps, actin'. Especially when a bull catches ya. Ya have to act your way out of some tough situations."

"Humans can do alot of things when they put their mind to it..." Street said softly. "Well, he's more of a pickpocket/factory kid then a Newsie. Oh, yeah, I been meanin' ta ask ya, why'd ya become a Newsie?" Street asked, tilting her head. She smiled. "I'm always wonderin' why people chose ta do the things they do." She explained.

Thad thought a moment. Why had he become a newsie? "Well," he began, "When I first got to the city I realized it was a lot bigger than I thought it would be. Keep in mind I lived in the backwoods of the Pennsylvania mountains all my life. I had no clue where to go or what to do when I got here. I was lost. For the first day I walked around in awe. Then I got the idea to sit back and observe how things worked. Like i was training for something, and really I was; I was training for a new life. There are many people in this city and none of them seemed to be like be except for this group of kids I took note of. I started fallowing them to see how they lived, and soon I became just like them. Now, I'm a newsie."

"I see. I've lived in this city my whole life, so I guess I never realized the sheer size of it." Street said thoughtfully. "I can imagine bein' lost and such, happens ta me all the time." She laughed and waved a hand dismissively.
"I guess I became a pickpocket in a different way... It all started in the orphanage, I would steal other kids food-we never had enough-and then I started stealin' their pocket money 'cause I was always hungry." She tilted her head to the side. "When I got kicked out, I had no money or food... I thought about becomin' a newsie, but ya always have ta rely on others... I had lost faith in others-no I didn't know what trust and faith were at that point. When ya steal, ya only have ta rely on yourself. Your fingers, your brains, and most of all, your feet. Now, I know about faith and trust, but I can't become anythin' but a thief, I know nothin' else. Besides, I make more money stealin' then anythin' else." She shrugged, not concerned with the world. "It's easier, people don't hurt ya as much-though don't get me wrong, I love people. They're so interestin'. Livin' different lives that are all the same, somehow."

Thad listened carefully to Street's story. "They are interestin' I could just sit for hours and just watch what they do. Like you said different lives but yet all the same. Like we all have different backgrounds, but we've all experienced a lot of the same things. We have all experienced loss of loved ones for sure," Thad said.
He thought about that for a moment. How everyone was different, but still the same. It was like that everywhere. Somewhere all the way across the ocean knew what it was like to be poor. Thad was sure of it. "Ya know when ya think of things like that it makes you not feel so alone; ya know?" He said looking at Street.

Street nodded. "Yeah, I suppose so. I never feel alone, not really." She said, tilting her head to the other side. She glanced at him. "Do ya feel alone... often?" She asked quietly, embarrassed for asking. "Ya see, alot of people feel alone, but... I don't think they really are." She said thoughtfully. She rubbed her head. "I felt a snowflake, it was a large one, and it hit me square in the head. It was cold!" She laughed happily.

Thad laughed along with Street for a moment, then his expression got more seriously and he prepared to answer the question Street had asked a moment ago. "Do I feel alone often?" He repeated looking to the sky, "Yeah...yeah I do. Since the day I was born I felt alone..." his voice trailed of. Then, he put on a fake half smile, "But hey...what's it matter. Ya get used to it; ya know?"
A cold wind blew past him, "It's getting' colder. What do ya say we get ya under that bridge." Thad smiled as he looked at Street.

A cold wind blew past him, "It's getting' colder. What do ya say we get ya under that bridge." Thad smiled as he looked at Street.
She nodded, liking the idea. "Yeah, we should, it's gettin' late too. Hold one for a minute, yeah?" She asked him, digging through her rugged haversack. She finally extracted two blankets-one slightly thick and the other thinner. She handed the thicker blanket to him. "Here, this should keep ya warmer." She said, wrapping the one she had chosen around her tightly. Her head peeked out from it slightly. She grinned at him. "See, ain't it warmer?"

Thad chuckled at Street with the blanket wrapped around her. "Thanks," he said taking the other one. He exhaled watching his breath turn to a white mist in the frigid air. He knew it would be polite to tell Street to take the blanket back to wrap around herself, but he was freezing so he didn't bother. As he wrapped the thick blanket around his shoulders he could feel its warmth. Thad sighed happily. He didn't carry blankets with him. He figured they would just weigh him down if he ever had to run from someone; which in truth that happened daily.
