Violet and Catherine moved to New York City for a new life. Not knowing what to do for money, Violet sold her long, chocolate brown hair for just a few dollars. That's what helped them to keep going. Violet worked two jobs, a bartender at night, and in a restaurant during the day. She tried to make life the best as possible for Catherine. Catherine was able to go to school for a couple of years, and with the little time she had with her mother she was taught simple things, such as reading, and taking care of the home. However, that didn't last long, when Catherine was fifteen, Violet passed away from tuberculosis.
