Sarah took a deep breath and pushed the doors open. The little bell above the door dinged. If Sarah got the job she wanted, that bell was going to get pretty annoying. But she wasn't going to jump to conclusions. She didn't even know if they were hiring. But she needed this job. Well, she didn't really need it. She had a job. But a factory worker was not something she enjoyed. She wanted to be somewhere with more freedom. Anywhere with windows and fresh air. Tibby's was the first place she thought of, since she went there with Jack about three times a week.
She took one more shaky breath and walked up to the counter. It was now or never. Sarah pulled her shoulders back and walked with an air of confidence. That is what her mother told her to do. He dad didn't know she was taking this job; he would be upset. He already didn't like the idea of working at a factory and he would probably be very upset about her working with a bunch of guys, serving a bunch of newsies. But she wanted this, she needed this.
Sarah walked up to the counter and leaned on it comfortably. "Is your manager in?" She asked one of the waiters. He nodded and told her to take a seat and that he would get him for her. Sarah nodded and headed for the nearest seat. As she waited, Sarah fiddled with her dress absently and hummed nervously. She needed to get a grip, but she was just so nervous. In the distance, Sarah heard that annoying dinging of the bell, but ignored it.

Truth be told, Jack Kelly hadn't been in the best of moods lately. It was an anomaly, because although he could become slightly broody once in a while when things weren't quite going as he had planned, it seemed as if everything was coming apart at the seams as this point. Usually he would just slip into his carefree life and enjoy every second of never being told what to do, but even that was threatened by the current circumstances, and the usually grinning Manhattan leader rarely did so these days.
Mike D. Greaser was back in New York, and Jack would hear rumor upon rumor from a Harlem boy named Scamp or even Mush's girl, Nellie. They would tell him some of the things they had heard, and not many of them were good. Followers, spies, and growing power were among the tidbits of news that Jack had gathered over the time they had first realized Mike was back. Jack knew he would have to talk to Spot, Mitch, Note and Jordan if he wanted to have a chance against Mike.
Further adding to the coming apart of Jack's current life, he had seen his father again for the first time in many years. Mark Sullivan had come to the lodging house a long time ago, looking for him and Jinks. Jack had managed to get rid of him, and hoped never to see Mark Sullivan again. He knew he probably wouldn't, but the knowledge and possibilities bit at him and made his head spin.
On top of everything, he couldn't remember the last time he'd spent a good afternoon with his friends, or seen Sarah. He seemed to recall the last time he was out with all the boys was the day that Mush recalled Mike Greaser's story, and sure enough, like magic, there he was not too much time later. Jack hated how, all of a sudden, it seemed like he wasn't in control of his own life. He sold his papers and wandered around the streets of Manhattan with a bitter heart.
With about ten papers left over from his selling and figuring he would finish them off in no time, Jack began to feel the pangs of hunger and figured he best eat now rather than later. He walked into Tibby's without looking up and took a seat at one of the tables. He looked up toward the bar, trying to catch the eye of one of the servers, when to his great shock he saw Sarah.
Jack almost knocked over his chair from rising so quickly. He hadn't seen her in weeks. Shouldn't she be at the factory? He came up behind her. "Sarah?" he exclaimed, seeing her from the side and confirming it was her. Without hesitation he pulled her into an embrace. "Hi, Sarah...Jeez, I missed ya..."

As she sat and waited, Sarah let her thoughts wonder. Sarah had been kind of lonely lately. She hadn't seen any of the newsies, even her brothers. They had all been busy with 'something'. Whatever that something was. She missed them to say the least. She missed Kid's smiling face. She missed Race's smart mouth. She missed Mush's stories. She missed David's mouth. She missed Les's crazy laughter. She missed Jack's sweet kisses...
''Sarah?"
Sarah was interrupted by a screeching chair and a voice she recognized. She turned around in her chair and was met with the charming face of Jack. All her doubts and suspicions were thrown out the door as Jack engulfed her in a loving embrace. She wrapped her arms around him and breathed in his scent. How long had it been since they had seen each other?
"Hi, Sarah...Jeez, I missed ya..."
They pulled apart and Sarah was beaming. It had been so long since she had been in his arms and she missed it. "I miss you too, Jack." She smiled and leaned forward to plant a soft kiss on his cheek. Several people had looked at the loving couple, but brushed it off as young love. The nervousness of her upcoming interview was gone as she looked at Jack.

"I miss you too, Jack."
She kissed his cheek, and he did likewise. Hang everyone else, they could look away. He hadn't seen Sarah in what felt like forever, and as far as he was concerned he could kiss her all he wanted. He pulled her into his arms again and drew back a moment later. "Where ya been, Sarah? I haven't seen you in weeks..." He wondered why she hadn't come around the lodging house. Then again, he wondered why he hadn't come around the Jacobs' apartment. He recalled everything that had been going on, and at the moment it seemed like a feeble excuse not to see Sarah for the time he did.
After the joy of seeing her again began to simmer, Jack found himself confused. It was the middle of the day, and Sarah should be working. As far as he knew her father hadn't been able to find work yet, even with his arm on its way to healing. Mrs. Jacobs was busy taking care of everything at home. David and Les were selling, but a newsboy's salary, wasn't enough to put bread on the table for a family of five. "Why aren't you at work?" he asked, his brow furrowed.
A moment after he asked the question he found himself not caring why she wasn't working in the factory. She was here, and didn't that matter? Jack shook his head. "Boy, but am I glad you're here." As much as he hated to admit it, it was nice to have Sarah around to listen to him when he needed it. And he had been so angry and upset lately, it would be good for someone to listen to him. His boys were great, but they weren't exactly the listening ears he had been hoping for...

"Where ya been, Sarah? I haven't seen you in weeks..."
Sarah giggled and gave him a look. "I could ask you the same thing, Jack!" They were still entangled in each others arms, but neither of them really wanted to let go anytime soon. It had been so long since they had seen each other. Jack's usual visits to their apartment had gotten more and more sparse until they finally stopped all together.
"Why aren't you at work?"
Sarah sighed and pulled away from him. "Jack, things are getting worse at my house. I need to find a better job." She sighed again and shook her head. Work was awful, but her house was even worse. She wanted a job that would be somewhat relaxing. Someplace she could go to when things got out of hand at home. The factory was just no cutting it. "I'm applying here."
As if on cue, the manager came up. Sarah stood and shook his hand. They went through the normal introductions and such. Sarah sent Jack a look. He didn't look like he was in his normal, playful mood, but you never knew. He could very easily jump into the interview and say something very embarrassing. To her dismay, the manager offered to have the interview right here. They sat down, and Sarah next to Jack. The interview went on, not lasting more than 10 minutes. Sarah kicked Jack playfully, all the while smiling sweetly to her soon-to-be boss.
He stood and shook her hand once more. Sarah smiled and nodded to him. He turned and headed back to work. Sighing, she sat back down and placed her head in her hands. She glanced over at Jack and found him smirking like an idiot. "Shut up..." She muttered, very unlady like.
Sarah hated talking to people like she just did. She felt so fake. It made her incredibly nervous to do this sort of thing. She was positive Jack had noticed and was even more positive that he was going to poke fun at her.
"Boy, but am I glad you're here."
"Me too. I missed you..." She replied, grinning.

"I could ask you the same thing, Jack!"
Jack's grin faltered for a moment, before returning in a modest smirk. "Ya know, I been busy...lot of things goin' on. But I shoulda come seen ya." He realized that seeing Sarah might have made things a little lighter on him, considering everything that had been going on. Maybe he could get away with her for a while and forget about everything that had been going on. Liking the sound of that idea, he asked her aloud, "If ya ain't doin' nothin', c'mon around with me. Y'know, for a walk?"
"Jack, things are getting worse at my house. I need to find a better job. I'm applying here."
Jack didn't have time to reply. The manager came out and began interviewing Sarah. He sat back and waited for everything to be over and done with. Sarah, working at Tibby's? Now wouldn't that be something. He would get to see her every day, and maybe she wouldn't come home from work every day looking weary and upset. He noticed something off about her...she seemed mechanical, almost, like a picture on a billboard or something. She turned back to Jack and put her head in her hands. In response, Jack put his arm around her, grinning.
"Shut up..."
He chortled a little. "You was lookin' like a wax doll there," he said honestly.
"Me too. I missed you..."
Jack cupped her chin in his hand, raised her head, and kissed her quickly. "I missed you, too..."
((Sorry. Severe writer's block.))

"Ya know, I been busy...lot of things goin' on. But I shoulda come seen ya.] If ya ain't doin' nothin', c'mon around with me. Y'know, for a walk?"
Sarah brightened immediately. A walk sounded nice. Anything sounded nice if it involved Jack. She hadn't seen him in a very long time and she missed him. Honestly, Sarah had been doubting him. She'd been hearing a lot of rumors and since she hadn't talked to Jack in a few weeks, she had chosen to believe those rumors. But now, sitting here with Jack, everything seemed perfect. "Let me finish up here, and then I will go anywhere with you," she stated, smiling brightly.
"You was lookin' like a wax doll there,"
He placed his arm around her and chuckled. Sarah couldn't help but laugh at him. And besides, it was nice to hear him laugh. She nudged him softly with her shoulder and repeated, "Shut up." If her mom heard her now, she would be appalled. Shut up was not a word that Sarah's mom liked her to use. But Sarah didn't care, not in the least.
Jack cupped her chin in his hand, raised her head, and kissed her quickly. "I missed you, too..."
Sarah sighed against his lips and smiled as he pulled away. "I'm glad you did, because otherwise I would be worried..." She teased.
((Eh, me too... But I came up with a really good idea from this post! I shall PM you!))
