The news had just reached him. Nellie had been killed. Manhattan was in an uproar. Bronx was an official enemy. Mush was a mess and useless. Most of the Manhattan boys were angry and distracted. And for now, all of this took the heat off of Midtown. Mike felt the need to thank Mitch for that.
Brilliant, honestly, brilliant. That was the only word Mike could use to describe Mitch. At first, Mike had just thought Mitch was going to be the brains of this operation and that Mike was going to have to do all of the dirty stuff. But now, now Mitch had really proved himself. Killing one of his own, while she had no way of defense? Mike almost laughed out loud at the thought. The newsie world had something new to talk about.
Mike almost wondered if Mitch had done this to get attention. Mike knew Mitch was angry with him and the fact that he took most of the spot light. Had he done this to make himself known? Mike didn't blame him; he would have done the same. Although... Mike did feel a bit of resentment toward Mitch. Couldn't he have asked him first? Not like Mike would have said anything different, or changed Mitch's mind in anyway. It just would have been nice to be involved. After all, the were partners...
No matter, whats done is done. And, Mike thought, I must admit it was done fabulously. Mike just wished he could have been there when Manhattan found out. How did they find out? That was another reason for Mike's visit. If there was a rat among the newsies, Mike needed to know. He wanted to make Mitch aware of this. He was still the leader of this mutiny. He still had the right to check up on his other Burroughs.
Mike started when his feet hit something hard. Glancing up, he realized he had reached the Bronx lodging house. Hmm, that was fast. Mike was so lost in his thoughts, he had not even noticed this. He walked up the steps and began to knock on the door, but thought better of it. He was still in charge.
He pushed the door open and sauntered in. This might as well have been his lodging house.
