Bella Anne Braxton leisurely strolled through the crowded square, laden with a bundle of the New York World's latest. She pulled her newsie cap tight over her shining curls, and smiled brightly. It had been one a those days where everything was going right. The sun was beaming warmly upon her face, the birds were singing sweetly, and she was sellin papes like hotcakes! It was turnin out to be a fine morning... Slowly her smile faded. Except for one thought that continued to plague her mind like a bad song.
Jack. After ardently fighting her way to get back to New York, after risking her very life to escape, and victoriously returning to be with him, Jack Kelly had forgotten she existed. True, he had found himself a new love, but still... was a simple, "Hiya Bella, how ya doin?" asking too much? She sighed. After all they'd been through, was she only a faint, fleeting memory to him? She frowned. Nah, she wouldn't think about that, now. There was work to be done, papers to sell, and headlines to hawk!
"Extry Extry, Madman Releases Ring Of Terror On Streets Of New York!" She called out vibrantly to the crowd, hoping to catch someone's attention. Smiling, a young, handsome, well dressed man walked up to her and tipped his hat, revealing his well kept blond curls. "Hello, sweetheart, I'll buy one a those prints from ya!" She smiled warmly back at him "I thank ya kindly, sir. One cent please." Still smiling, the man dug around in his pocket, as Bella gave him his paper. "I sure hope you didn't read that story, sweetness. I wouldn't want a pretty little thing like you getting scared." Bella smiled softly to herself. Trust me, it would take a lot more than a maniac to get me scared, she thought. If he only knew...
Quickly, the man pulled a nickel from his pocket and placed it in her hand. "There you go, gorgeous. Keep the change and buy yourself somethin' real nice." He tipped his hat once more, and was gone. Bella stared down at the nickel, frozen. She shuddered as she was reminded of a similar scene.
She could still see his piercing blue eyes, and crooked smile. His words she would never forget. "Do you have a name, love?" Those were the words that had changed her life forever. For, that was the day she met Drake Camden. Her kidnapper, her tormentor, the reason she was always looking over her shoulder. He had bought a paper that day, and had paid her with a fifty cent piece. Likewise, he too had told her to keep the change. Never would she have guessed, that fifty cents would be the cost of her freedom and security.
Angrily, she cast the nickel away, and continued walking. It rolled for the longest time, until it suddenly stopped at the feet of a shady figure, shrouded in the shadows. Curious to see where the nickel had landed, Bella suddenly stopped, and turned to face the stranger. She watched, as he picked it up slowly, and walked into the light. He was a young man, perhaps a year older than her, with fair skin, tousled jet black hair, and expressive blue-grey eyes that seemed dark, yet playful. His hair hung wildly over his eyes, and he brushed it back, as he studied the nickel in his hand. Slowly his gaze turned to her.
